Who can believe it’s been six years? I always forget that I began this blog in the year between my MA and PhD, so whatever year I am going into for the PhD, Shinpai is turning that number. ๐Ÿ™‚ What a journey it’s been! It has been a struggle to keep things going during prelims and research abroad, but I have had immense support from regular and guest contributors, and all the followers via email, Facebook, and Twitter. I hope What Can I Do with a BA in Japanese Studies? continues to flourish and be a helpful resource for any and everyone pursing Japanese, be it in academia, translation, government, or whatever other path you’ve found. As always, thank you for your support and I welcome your suggestions in the future for how we can help serve the Japanese-speaking community best! Here’s to many more years to come!

The Embassy of Japan seeks a highly qualified person who can perform as an economic researcher and advisor to the Economic Section. You will be required to support the diplomats by producing research and analysis reports on economic issues as well as working within a team of locally employed staff to support the wider functions of the Embassy.

Duties include:

Producing a daily economic report
Producing research/analysis/study reports on UK Government policy, the UK economic situation, and the UK economic relations with the foreign counties including Japan
Keeping diplomats up-to-date and informed on current economic and political affairs; developing an awareness of the issues important to the Embassy

Resource: Petzold scrolls collection of Buddhist art

Harvard Universityโ€™s Harvard-Yenching Library recently launched digital access to one of their most valuable collections, the Petzold scrolls collection. The collection includes 424 scrolls that were acquired from the family of Bruno Petzold (1873-1949) in 1951. Petzold was a German-born scholar of Buddhism, and thus the majority of the collection reflects this deep interest. The works, primarily paintings, woodblock prints, calligraphy, and rubbings from Japan, also include some materials from China and Tibet.

The site contains nine pages with extensive images of the collection, each included with the title in their original language and a Romanized text version. If a date is available for the piece, it is included on the individual page for the artwork, although no other information is provided. Each piece includes a high-resolution photograph with zooming option capabilities for a closer look at the work, which is incredibly valuable for visual analysis. Quick browsing is also easily possible with left and right arrow keys, rather than clicking each individual page.

Unfortunately, at this time the collection does not include any detailed background on each artwork, but the collection itself is of great importance for research purposes, so hopefully more information will be forthcoming. Check it out through the link below!

Objectives: the overall objectives of the conference are to present the latest research and current debates within the field of Asian studies,
to promote transdisciplinary and transcultural exchanges, and to foster international collaborations.

Panels:

Each panel will consist of 3 to 6 speakers (topics are unrestricted).

Participation of PhD students and postdocs is highly encouraged[1].

The following three types of panels will be considered:

– Panels organized under a common topic, with speakers, preferably from more than one country, specialized in different areas or disciplines

– Panels on a co-authored book or a special issue of journal dedicated to Asia, published after October 2015 or forthcoming

– Panels on existing research projects (for instance ANR, H2020, JSPSโ€ฆ funded projects). Several panels can be organized for a given research project.

Languages: English and/or French.

How to submit a proposal? Proposals must be submitted online on the conference website (http://congresasie2017.sciencesconf.org), first by coordinators of the panel and then by each speaker participating in the panel, by31ย Octoberย 2016[2]. Job Opening: Visiting Position: Japanese literature and comparative literature

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Japanese literature, Comparative Literature or closely related field with a focus on Japanese literature and culture must be awarded by time of application. Priority will be given to candidates with a promising program of research and experience in teaching Comparative Literature and Japanese literature and culture. Applicants preferred with native or near-native fluency in Japanese.

UCR is a world-class research university with an exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body. Its mission is explicitly linked to providing routes to educational success for underrepresented and first-generation college students. A commitment to this mission is a preferred qualification.

Duties: Visiting Assistant Professors participate in research, teaching, and service. Additional duties will include supervising studies with both undergraduate and graduate students, mentoring graduate students in professional development and contributing to service associated with membership in departmental program committees.

The full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position will instruct six courses over three quarters including one graduate seminar in Comparative Literature. The part-time Visiting Assistant Professor position, duties will consist of the instruction of five courses including one graduate seminar in Comparative Literature.

Courses scheduled in the Fall Quarter include CPLT 277 โ€œSeminar in Comparative Literature,โ€ JPN 22 โ€œIntroduction to Japanese Film,โ€ and JPN 145 โ€œModern Japanese Thought.โ€ Courses in the Winter and Spring will be scheduled according to the Japanese Programโ€™s curricular needs.

Asia and the Americas no longer occupy the disconnected extremes of an imagined map. Nor do they continue to embody the antipodes of East and West, framing Europe as the symbolic center. Rather, accelerated by recent geopolitical and global economic shifts, the Transpacific has emerged as a space of intense transcultural movements and exchanges, reviving the โ€œswarmlike buzz of activityโ€ around and across the perimeter of the Pacific that Claude Lรฉvi-Strauss had pitted against โ€œthe great Atlantic silenceโ€ prior to the โ€œdiscoveryโ€ of the Americas (Tristes Tropiques 297). And yet, most approaches to the cultural interactions of the Transpacific remain limited by a focus on the Northern part of the Americas, often equating the label of โ€œAmericanโ€ implicitly (or explicitly) with the US. Recent exciting work on the Transpacific that has started to include Latin America, thus troubling not only easy divisions of East and West, but also of North and South, often divided into and thus limited by the perspectives of specific disciplines, such as Asian-American studies, Latin-American Studies, or diaspora studies.

This special issue will gather different emerging approaches to the intercultural study of Asia and Latin America with the aim of rethinking the Transpacific as a method, a lens for comparison, rather than simply an area or a region. The emergence of new Transpacific perspectives signals the myriad possibilities of new transregional frameworks that challenge conventional geopolitical models of comparative studies. Consequently, we invite essays that approach the real and imagined spaces of the Transpacific between Asia and Latin America from a wide variety of perspectives and disciplines. We especially welcome work that reflects critically and creatively on the multiple possible meanings, methodologies, and mappings of the Transpacific and that pays attention to alternative links between Asia and Latin America: from diaspora, textual circulation, and cultural exchanges to uneven dialogues, compelling analogies, or conceptual affinities.

Authors’ names should not appear on manuscripts; instead, please include a separate document with the author’s name and address and the title of the article with your electronic submission. Authors should not refer to themselves in the first person in the submitted text or notes if such references would identify them; any necessary references to the author’s previous work, for example, should be in the third person.
