Instituion: United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS)
Location: Tokyo
Start date: February 1, 2013
Application deadline: January 11, 2013
Education requirements: Doctorate (PhD) (not ABD) or PhD candidate (must be in research stage with no class requirements left)
Language requirements: Fluency in both oral and written English.
The Institute is recruiting a Postdoctoral or PhD Fellow for its Sustainable Urban Futures Programme, which focuses on understanding how global environmental concerns are translated into local policies and vice-versa (how local concerns are incorporated into international environmental policies). The programme conducts research seeking solutions to global environmental problems at the local level and analyses how cities in developing countries create the institutional capacity to implement effective environmental policies with social inclusion. In this context, local authorities and organizations have played important roles in policy implementation to tackle issues related to climate change and biodiversity, even though the media and much of the literature focuses on debates at the global or country level.
The Fellow is expected to research patterns of environmental governance and policy implementation designed to tackle global environmental problems in the case of one or more cities in developing countries. He/she is expected to understand the role that governmental and non-governmental organizations play in climate change-related policies and how those policies are linked to environmental and development policies at the local and national levels. The Fellow is expected to contribute to the development of a tool to analyse urban climate co-benefits. This position requires skills in quantitative analysis and modeling.

JUSFCย accepts grant applications in the following areas:
1)ย Exchanges and Scholarship
2) Global Challenges
3) Arts and Culture
4) Education and Public Affairs
Which organizations may apply?
Any non-profit organization in the United States or Japan that deals with Japanese studies, the study of the United States, public affairs or the arts may apply. Individuals may not apply for support directly to the Commission except for the Creative Artist Exchange Fellowship Program.
When are JUSFC deadlines?
July1 annually for all programs except the Creative Artists Fellowship Program, which has an annual submission deadline of March 1. All hard copy applications must be received at the Commissionโs office by the close of business 5 PM July 1. Means of delivery are via regular mail, commercial delivery service or messenger. Fax copies will not be accepted. If July 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, applications will be accepted until the close of business on the next Monday.
What is the amount of the โaverageโ grant? How much can I ask for?
A. There is no meaningful โaverageโ for an award. Rather than asking how much the Commission will support and then building a budget to meet a targeted figure, it is better that an applicant itemize a realistic budget based on the needs of the project as fully described in the project narrative. The Commissionโs most recent biennial reports are available at its website at www.jusfc.gov.
How long is the average duration of a project?
Projects may range in duration anywhere from a few months to approximately one-and-a-half years. If a project is longer than this, the Commission may approve support for Year One, and in principle for the remaining years, pending successful outcome of Year One of the project. In this case resubmission of a request for support for each successive year will be necessary.

Religion and Politics in Contemporary Japan: Soka Gakkai Youth and Komeito
London and New York: Routledge
(Japan Anthropology Workshop Series).
Book description:
Presenting a study of politics at grassroots level among young Japanese, this book examines the alliance between the religious movement Soka Gakkai (the “Value-creation Society”) and Komeito (the “Clean Government Party”), which shared power with the Liberal Democratic Party from 1999 to 2009. Drawing on primary research carried out among Komeito supporters, the book focuses on the lives of supporters and voters in order to better understand the processes of democracy. It goes on to discuss what the political behaviour of young Komeito supporters tell us about the role of religious organizations, such as Soka Gakkai, in Japanese politics. Unlike most other books on politics in Japan which tend to concentrate on political elites, this book provides extremely valuable insights into political culture at the grassroots level.

The holidays. I bet you’reย thinking about social gatherings with friends and family, copious amounts of food including cakes and cookies, staying warm by the fireplace, and all the general merriment that comes this time of year. I, however, was told by my doctor to lose 15 pounds, drop my cholesterolย 10 points, not sit by this fireplace this holiday season and get more active.
Soon after that announcement, Spoon & Tamago posted 5 Japanese Homes Designed to Keep You in Shape. Perfect. Timing. I admit I have yet to finish decorating my condo. I still have a few more rooms and high walls with nothing on them. Clean, modern aesthetics and everything I could ask for in a home. Quite honestly, the one that I have my eyes on is the home with the rock climbing wall.
I’m smitten. Check out Spoonย & Tamago’sย 5 Japanese Homes Designed to Keep You in Shape and let me know which one is your favorite! I could only imagine how much fun it would be if, during my homestay, I got to live in one of these homes.
