The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign added its 13-millionth book to its collection at the end of September, which happens to be the Ise Monogatari (Tales of Ise) of 1608, the first illustrated Japanese printed book. It is also the first printed edition of Ise Monogatari! If you’re not aware of what your university (or even local public libraries, which especially in big cities have unique collections of unexpected items) has in its possession, be sure to check it out! Oftentimes you can go take a look at these fabulous items of the past first-hand thanks to special collections experts.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has added its 13-millionth book, maintaining our status as the largest public university library in America.  The 13-millionth volume is the Ise Monogatari of 1608, the first illustrated Japanese printed book.  It is also the first printed edition of the popular Ise Monogatari (or Tales of Ise).  Published by Suminokura Soan 角倉素庵 (1571-1632),  a wealthy entrepreneur, scholar, litterateur and art connoisseur, it is also one of the earliest Japanese books printed with moveable type.

Soan’s printing establishment, which he set up at Saga 嵯峨 village near Kyoto, produced the much sought after “Saga-bon” imprints, of which this is the most famous.

Resource: Japan Artists Information Directory (JAID)

Paula just alerted me to the existence of this new and exciting resource. The Japan Artists Information Directory (JAID) is a website organized by the Five College Consortium (based in Western Massachusetts), listing teachers and practitioners of Japanese traditional arts based here in the United States.

Up until now, so far as I am aware, finding teachers or performers in the Japanese traditional arts has been mostly by word-of-mouth. I spent this past summer in NY, and was looking to keep practicing / studying sanshin (Okinawa shamisen), which I had picked up the previous year at my university; I ended up finding a great sanshin teacher, but only because a blogger I follow mentioned that there would be a sanshin performance at a “Japan Block Fair” going on in the city. Had I known of a directory like JAID, I might not have had to rely so much on connections and word-of-mouth – not to mention sheer luck.

The website is only just getting started, but already it lists nearly 200 individuals/groups all across the country (and some in Canada). This could be quite useful for anyone looking for a teacher to study under, or a performer to invite for a performance/workshop.

You can search by name (alphabetically), or by region, clicking on the map to go more specifically down to artists in a particular state, and you can also search by genre. The directory currently covers performing arts almost exclusively, but covers a broad range from musicians (with separate categories for biwa, shamisen, Tsugaru shamisen, fue, gagaku, koto, etc.) to dancers (e.g. Nihon Buyo, Butoh), to theatrical performers (e.g. Noh, Kabuki), to those practicing arts such as Chanoyu and Ikebana, as well as those practicing or teaching Okinawan performing arts. A miscellaneous “Other Arts” category currently includes, among others, a practitioner of traditional woodblock printing, a number of voice teachers, a ceramics artist, and a specialist in parapara dancing.

The site has only first been launched within the last few weeks, but I am hoping it will grow to incorporate a good majority of the prominent teachers and performers in the country. Right now, very few of the artists I have heard of or studied under are included in the directory, but if they and others add themselves, this could become an excellent resource for finding teachers or performers.

The directly appears to be exclusively “opt-in,” so if you are a teacher or practitioner of traditional arts, please take a moment to contact the organizers at jaid@fivecolleges.edu, or to submit an artist application, and ask your teachers or friends & colleagues if they would be interested in joining.

Position Description Summary:
The George Washington University Libraries invites applications for the position of Japan Librarian. The incumbent will join a dynamic, multidimensional program whose members actively engage in shaping distinctive collections and services that reflect the University’s growing, rapidly evolving international focus. The Japan Resource Center (JRC) librarian is responsible for developing, planning and managing the services and collections of the JRC.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will also conduct ongoing outreach to faculty, students and researchers focused on the study of Japan across the social sciences and humanities; provide research and instruction support; develop associated programming, and develop, evaluate and manage strong interdisciplinary collections and services in support of the University’s evolving research mission.

JRC staff members work in collaboration with other GRC staff and the broader GW Libraries community to develop coordinated services and collections. These include the Reference Services and Education and Instruction Group, the Resource Description Group, and collections librarians offering related services.

As a member of the Global Resources Center management team, the JRC librarian will participate in the ongoing development of GRC collections and services, and may actively engage in fundraising, grant writing, marketing and outreach in support of the JRC. The position reports to the Director of Global Resources.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a Master’s degree in a humanities or social sciences discipline, with coursework `relevant to the study of Japan;

Experience working with students and faculty in a college or university setting;

Reading and writing fluency in Japanese.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in a humanities or social sciences discipline, with an emphasis on the study of Japan;

Coursework in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or similarly appropriate/equivalent advanced degree (e.g. MLIS, MIS, etc.);

Creative programming (donor events, exhibit openings, etc.) experience;

Evidence of ability to conduct classroom instruction;

Demonstrated success in developing outreach initiatives in support of academic priorities;

Excellent oral and written English-language skills;

Reading knowledge of Korean;

Interest in building digital collections and curating virtual exhibits;

Demonstrated, ability to create positive relations with faculty, students, donors and support groups;

Funding: The Nippon Foundation Fellows Program at the Inter‐University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC)

The IUC is pleased to announce a new 10‐month fellowship program for Ph.D. students in all fields of Japanese studies, generously sponsored by the Nippon Foundation. The Nippon Foundation Fellows Program at the IUC aims to provide the most promising young scholars with the deep linguistic and cultural knowledge needed to become leaders in their fields, and to foster strong collegial bonds and intellectual exchange among them and with their IUC senpai.

In addition to their regular classes the Nippon Foundation Fellows will:

  • Meet regularly with each other and the IUC Resident Director to discuss their research interests and experiences in Japan
  • Invite an IUC alumni scholar to give a lecture at the IUC
  • Conduct research during the second half of the program and present their results in Japanese at the Nippon Foundation Fellows Symposium at the end of the academic year

Eligibility: all applicants must be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program, have a research focus on Japan, and an intention to pursue a career in academia upon completion of their doctoral degree.
Tuition: The Nippon Foundation fellows will receive a full tuition scholarship and a modest living stipend to attend the 10‐Month Fellowship Program of the IUC in Yokohama.

The end of the Cold War and the bipolar era constituted a significant change in Germany’s and Japan’s foreign policy settings, granting both countries greater leeway to pursue policies divergent from Washington’s strategy. This important book fills a gap in the existing literature by employing an explicitly comparative framework for analyzing and evaluating Germany’s and Japan’s post-Cold War regional foreign policy trajectories. Recent non-comparative studies diverge in their assessments of the extent to which the two countries’ foreign policies are characterized by continuity or change, as while the majority of analyses on Germany find overall continuity in policies and guiding principles, prominent works on Japan see the country undergoing drastic change. Through a qualitative content analysis of key foreign policy speeches, this book traces and compares German and Japanese national role conceptions by identifying policymakers’ perceived duties and responsibilities of their country in international politics. Further, through two case studies on missile defence policies and textbook disputes this study investigates actual foreign policy behaviour in order to question the assertion that post Cold War Germany and Japan are following very different paths.

The Japan Society of Northern California is a public affairs 501(c) 3 non-profit with a mission to strengthen cooperation and understanding between the peoples of the United States and Japan through programs that expand knowledge, increase personal interaction and facilitate discussion of important issues.

The Office Manager will assist the President and the Board of Directors to achieve this mission by providing administrative and logistical support to facilitate smooth office and financial management. The Office Manager reports directly to the President.

Responsibilities:

Office Management:
– Record cash inflows, pay bills and monitor accounts payable/receivable using QuickBooks.
– Process credit card orders and refunds, and manage merchant account connections.
– Work with outside accountant and auditor to assure that monthly financial reports and annual audit are accurate and completed in a timely fashion.
– Oversee IRS filings and other compliance.
– Process payroll and maintain HR & 401k plan records.
– Coordinate staff and intern hiring, including recruitment and interviewing, and new employee intake procedures. Manage the Society interns.
– Work with all vendors of insurance, office supplies, and equipment maintenance and outside contractors.
– Maintain and update operations and procedures manuals.
– Distribute mail, answer telephones, and respond to inquiries about Japan Society programs or other Japan resources in the Bay Area.

Membership and Donor Data Management:
– Maintain the Society’s database in SalesForce, including overseeing recording dues, giving records, and contact information for current, prospective and past members.
– Generate reports on SalesForce data as needed.

IT:
– Maintain office IT, conduct regular backups, and work closely with IT contractors.
– Regularly update the Society’s website.

Administrative Support:
– Assist President with budget preparation and forecasting, and provide other support as needed.
– Schedule, plan and prepare materials for Board elections, Board and committee meetings, and the Annual General Meeting, and take minutes as needed.
– Maintain up-to-date Board contact information and all other Board-related documents.
– Provide support for programs as needed.

Qualifications:
