Call for Papers: Asian Studies Conference Japan, Tokyo

The Executive Committee of the Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers to be presented at the Seventeenth Asian Studies Conference Japan, to be held at J. F. Oberlin University, Tokyo on Saturday and Sunday, June 29-July 30, 2013.

The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2012. Results will be announced before the end of December.

The online application forms are available on the ASCJ website. These forms set out the requirements for individual paper proposals, panel proposals, and roundtable proposals:   http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~*
*ascj/

Panels are proposed by individual scholars around a common subject. Panels are composed of three or four paper presenters and one or more discussants. Panel proposals should include a 250 word maximum) abstract from each participant as well as a 250 word (maximum) statement that explains the session as a whole.

Roundtables offer an opportunity for participants to discuss a specific theme, issue or significant recent publication. A maximum of six active participants is recommended. While a roundtable proposal will not be as detailed as a panel proposal, it should explain fully the purpose, themes or issues, and scope of the session.

Individual papers give scholars an opportunity to participate in the conference even if they are not able to put together a complete panel.

Since only a limited number of individual papers can be accommodated, Preference will be given to junior scholars. Applicants have a better chance of acceptance as part of a panel.

Paper proposals should include a 250 word (maximum) abstract.

Please note that no person can appear on the program more than once.
The one exception is the doubling up of roles within a given panel (organizer/chair for example, or organizer/presenter).

The Executive Committee encourages members to submit proposals that, by focusing on more than one region or by drawing on more than one discipline, will attract a broad range of scholarly interest. Suggestions for innovative alternatives to the panels, individual papers and roundtables described above are also encouraged.

We often hear from individuals who would like to form a panel, but are short of one or two presenters. To make a  “call for co-panelists” through our Twitter feed, see:

Fun Link Friday: Complaint Choir of Tokyo

As midterm season approaches, many of us learning and teaching alike may be feeling frustrations and pressure from that huge pile of papers. Not to mention it’s the season for job seekers. Why not take a break and have a laugh with the samba-inspired music of the Tokyo Complaint Choir from 2009?

The opening, a beautiful choral flourish that sounds like a long sigh of annoyance, is one of my favorite parts. The energy and creativity of the members is inspiring.

Originating in Finland, the complaint choirs have been initiated around the world. Check out their main site for more complaint videos!

欲求不満を解放しよう。 And cheer up, it’s Friday!

From Application to Research: Fulbright in Japan

Aloha friends!

I’m Pamela Runestad, a PhD candidate in medical anthropology from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Paula Curtis of Shinpai Deshō asked me if I would share a little about my experience with scholarships in general and with Fulbright in particular. So, I’ve put together some general points about scholarship applications, Fulbright, and being in Japan on Fulbright Hays. I hope they’re helpful to you.

Just to give you an idea of my background with funding and where I’m coming from: I’ve been awarded scholarships sponsored by my departments (Anthropology and Center for Japanese Studies), my university (UHM), private foundations (The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation), the US government (Fulbright Hays), and the Japanese government (Global Center for Excellence) during my time at UH.  I was granted a Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award (DDRA) in Japan for the 2009-10 academic year, so I’ll focus on that award specifically towards the end of this post.

Over the years, I’ve gotten several tips from faculty and senior grad students about scholarship applications that are useful regardless of the type of funding agency. I’ll start with those.
