Geilhorn, Barbara / Grossmann, Eike / Miura, Hiroko / Eckersall, Peter (eds)
Enacting Culture: Japanese Theater in Historical and Modern Contexts

2012 · ISBN 978-3-86205-039-0 · 313 Seiten, geb. · EUR 56,—
Monographien, herausgegeben vom Deutschen Institut für Japanstudien (Bd. 51)

The Japanese theater scene is characterized by the vibrant coexistence of diverse forms of theater. Alongside well-known classical theater traditions, a stunningly modern scene exists, with an immeasurable number of small theaters. By focusing on the historical and contemporary contexts of how theater culture is enacted, this collection brings together essays on the spectrum of theater in Japan. Through literary and performance analyses and original case studies the collection explores complementary and interdisciplinary aspects of Japan’s performing arts. In an important and unique contribution, this volume includes essays by Japanese and Western scholars written in a mix of English and Japanese. Abstracts of each contribution translated into the opposite language allow readers without knowledge of both languages access to the main ideas of the essays.

Fun Link Friday: 20 Years of Docomo Cell Phone Design

NTT Docomo, one of Japan’s big-three cell-phone providers, recently showcased all the models of its cell phones dating back to 1987 at Tokyo Design Week 2012. DesignBoom’s coverage of the event, “Evolution of the Mobile Phone by Docomo,” includes photos of the exhibition, a video of the evolution of the phones, and close-ups of body and case designs through the years.

Timeline of cell phones 2001-2003 from the exhibition. Edited by designboom.

I find it interesting that my first (American) cell phone, a Nokia “candy-bar” style model from 2004, more closely resembles the Docomo models from the 1980s than those from the early ’00s! I also remember how Japanese cell phones were the height of technology until the iPhone came around. Even though the smart phone has homogenized cell-phone design to some extent, the designs and colors available for phone bodies and cases are still quite varied here, as you can see in the later photos.

What was your first Japanese cell phone?

Travis's avatar上り口説 Nubui Kuduchi

My thanks to my friend Victor, who just posted a link to an article on Tofugu, entitled “5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Major in Japanese (and 2 You Might Consider It).” There are plenty of very similar blog posts and articles online, and I clearly have not commented on any/all of them. But, I thought I would share my kneejerk responses to the five reasons given here, present some snarky counter-arguments, problematize the reasoning, and maybe debunk some myths.

1. You Might be Better Off Studying on Your Own

It’s true. You might be. If you have the right materials, and the drive, dedication, and discipline to actually study on your own rather than dabbling. The article points out, completely correctly, that simply taking Japanese classes at the undergraduate level, even for four years, will not get you to true fluency. I took those classes for four years…
