Exhibition: Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints

The Toledo Museum of Art has a free upcoming exhibition on Japanese art. From October 4 to January 1, 2014, the TMA is proud to offer Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints, which will feature an exquisite collection of 343 woodblock prints in pristine condition. The prints reflect the shin hanga or “new print” movement of the early 1900s that combined traditional technique with Western inspiration, and will be shown alongside kimonos, Kabuki costumes, samurai swords and other objects similar to those depicted in the prints. Admission to the exhibition is free.

The exhibition debuts with a free opening night party on Thursday, October 3 from 7 to 9 p.m., with music, hands-on activities, a cash bar, and access to an award-winning gourmet café until 8 p.m. I hope you will join us!

Call for Submissions: Forum for the History of Science in Asia Essay Prize

The Forum for the History of Science in Asia is proud to announce a competition for a best essay prize, to be awarded at the annual HSS meeting. Through a generous donation of an anonymous donor, the Forum will award $250 to an author of an essay that has the best potential to show how the study of the history of Asian science can methodologically contribute to the general field of History of Science, Technology and Medicine.

In order to be considered for the prize, please submit an essay (a recently published or still unpublished article, or a book/dissertation chapter) on the topic of history of science, technology, or medicine in Asia (including South, South-East and East Asia) to fhsasia@gmail.com by October 15, 2013. The essay should be in English, and should not exceed 40 double-spaced pages (not including images). In a separate document please submit a 250-words abstract, or, in case of a book/dissertation chapter, please submit a short overview of the whole project.

Overview:
New York Seikatsu Press is looking for an English page editor. The Shukan NY Seikatsu (週刊NY生活) paper has broad readership in the United States and Japan. This position is ideal for someone interested in journalism, editing, and Japanese-English translation. The applicant must be able to commute into New York City once per week.

* Prior professional translation and journalism experience is recommended, but not required.

Compensation:
a) There is some monetary recompense from SNYS (about $50/week).
b) The position fits well into any resume, and Ryoichi Miura (CEO and Editor-in-Chief) is a great professional reference.
c) Great experiences! You meet and learn about interesting people while doing a service to the bilingual community.
d) The job is also an excellent means to learn more about the Japanese community in New York!

Responsibilities (all once per week)
1. The SNYS English editor revises article J->E translations for quality, edits the article to meet American journalistic writing, and proofreads using the New York Times’ style guide (a copy is on-site).
2. Coordinating with, and hiring, columnists as needed.
3. Managing the English page’s weekly social media (at present, only Twitter).

About the Current Editor:
I started working as a Japanese-English translator in New York in 2010 after obtaining a MA in Japanese at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I started working for SNYS in March of 2011. I’ve truly enjoyed my time as an editor here – I’ve had the chance to hone my editing and translation QA skills, write features and columns, interview interesting people, and learn about great deals all over the city. Funding: 2014-2015 International Affairs Fellowship in Japan, sponsored by Hitachi, Ltd.

Founded in 1997, the International Affairs Fellowship in Japan (IAF-J), sponsored by Hitachi, Ltd., seeks to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between the rising generations of leaders in the United States and Japan. The program provides a selected group of mid-career U.S. citizens the opportunity to expand their professional horizons by spending a period of research or other professional activity in Japan. Fellows are drawn from academia, business, government, media, NGOs, and think tanks. In cooperation with the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the program’s sponsor, Hitachi, Ltd., assists fellows in finding suitable host organizations in Japan. CFR awards approximately three to five fellowships annually.

ELIGIBILITY

The IAF-J is only open to U.S. citizens between the ages of twenty-seven and forty-five. The program is intended primarily for those without substantial prior experience in Japan, although the selection committee has made exceptions when it considered that the fellowship would allow an individual to add a significant new dimension to his or her career. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not a requirement.

FELLOWSHIP AWARD

The duration of the fellowship is between three and twelve months. The program awards a stipend in yen which covers travel and living expenses in Japan. Fellows are considered independent contractors rather than employees of CFR, and are not eligible for employment benefits, including health insurance.

The Department of History in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in 19th and 20th century Asian history (East Asia, South Asia or Southeast Asia) with a specialization in gender.  The starting date for this position is July 1, 2014.

We seek a scholar who will strengthen and broaden our existing departmental expertise in histories of gender and sexuality. Familiarity with feminist and/or queer theory is a strong asset. Additionally, we welcome linkages to the current areas of research strength in the department, including: Native-Newcomer, colonial and post-colonial histories; the history of science and medicine; environmental history; twentieth century politics, culture and public policy; and the North American Great Plains. The successful candidate for this position will participate in teaching and research in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program (WGSt) located in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Culture and Creativity.  It is expected that the candidate would engage in collaborative research with faculty in the WGSt program, which might include: research on sexualities and race, gender and development, gender and the environment, and gender, representation and cultural studies.  In addition, the University of Saskatchewan offers a variety of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations across the College and the University, including: collaboration with the fifty scholars actively engaged in gendered research across the disciplines; with faculty in the International Studies Program; and with faculty engaged in international study/research abroad initiatives.
