Heritage Management in Korea and Japan: The Politics of Antiquity and Identity

Hyung Il-Pai

December 2013

298 pp.
ISBN: 9780295993058
Paperback $30.00
ISBN: 9780295993041
Hardcover $70.00

Publisher’s blurb, from University of Washington Press:

Imperial tombs, Buddhist architecture, palaces, and art treasures in Korea and Japan have attracted scholars, collectors, and conservators—and millions of tourists. As iconic markers of racial and cultural identity at home and abroad, they are embraced as tangible sources of immense national pride and popular “must-see” destinations.

This book provides the first sustained account to highlight how the forces of modernity, nationalism, colonialism, and globalization have contributed to the birth of museums, field disciplines, tourist industries, and heritage management policies. Its chapters trace the history of explorations, preservations, and reconstructions of archaeological monuments from an interregional East Asian comparative perspective in the past century.

Hyung Il Pai is professor of East Asian languages and cultural studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the author of Constructing “Korean” Origins [Harvard University Press, 2000].

Join us as we launch the first Eastern Paper Center in Ohio, led by prominent hanji scholar and practitioner Aimee Lee!

The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory & Educational Foundation, home of the only Korean papermaking studio in North America, will start a new Center devoted to the production of high-quality eastern-style papers. The Center will comprise workshops, staff and intern training, related exhibitions, and community outreach and partnerships.

We seek two to four interns who will train with Aimee and the Morgan staff for six months, from February to July (with the option to continue through August). This is an unpaid position for three days a week (specific days can be negotiated), seven hours a day, with lunch included. The content of this program is equivalent to a semester of college-level study. Interns will

  • Learn about Eastern paper traditions through the Morgan library that includes books, videos, periodicals, and paper objects
  • Train in traditional Korean papermaking at the only hanji facility on this continent

The Morgan will do everything possible to assist with relocation and finding resources in the Cleveland metro area, but cannot guarantee financial compensation. Having access to a car is fairly important as the public transportation system is not as strong as in other major cities. The Morgan is happy to provide paperwork for those using internship hours (500 total hours) for college credit, or to help procure outside funding.

Please submit a cover letter that details your interest and related experience and a 1-page resume to Aimee Lee at <aimeeslee@gmail.com> by December 15, 2013.

The top candidates will be called for phone interviews and final notification made by January 3, 2014.

Fun Link Friday: Restoring a Sake Merchant’s Edo-Period Home

In this Fun Link Friday, meet Austin and Sachiko Moore, a couple who have restored much of their Edo-period home in Hino (日野), Shiga pref., and are helping to restore other historic homes in the area.

Photo by Jeremie Souteyrat for The Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Moore’s pursuit of authenticity resulted in a house that looks like something out of an Edo-period samurai tale. Visitors enter through a sliding door—which is reddish-brown using traditional iron-oxide stain, as on much of the house’s exterior—into the den, a simple, narrow tatami room filled with soft light filtering through a delicate wooden-slat window. Next to it is another narrow room, once used by the merchant as his office; it has a low writing desk with an abacus resting on top. The merchant’s wife’s dressing room is now a guest bedroom with a view of a rock garden…

The house is discreetly equipped with modern essentials: An office closet hides a desk and computer. Some bathrooms have modern fixtures, such as a large Duravit sink. Also, the family dining room now has a wood floor rather than tatami mats, with some space dug under its low table so family members can stretch their legs as they eat.

Reblog: LifeAfterJET: Transitioning Your Teaching Experience

Considering teaching English in Japan after graduation or interested in teaching English as a second language for a career? Head over to JETWit.com to check out Tammy Wik’s feature on using her ESL experience to launch a career in TESOL.

This feature comes courtesy of Tammy Wik (Ishikawa-ken, 2007-2010). JET Alums fall into two different camps. Some leave their teaching days behind in Japan without ever turning back. Others are just dying to find ways to keep on with the classroom. In this article, Tammy shows how far you can take the English teaching route.

My name is Tammy and I do recruitment for the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Fellow (ELF) Program. I also work full-time as an Assessment Editor for CTB McGraw-Hill, where I am using the knowledge I gained during graduate school to help create strong and interesting test items for a national test that will be coming out in a few years. I thought I’d talk a little about what the ELF Program is and how I got to doing what I’m doing now.
