Book Announcement: The Halo of Golden Light: Imperial Authority and Buddhist Ritual in Heian Japan

Via University of Hawai’i Press.
9780824839864The Halo of Golden Light: Imperial Authority and Buddhist Ritual in Heian Japan
Author: Sango, Asuka
304pp. February 2015
Cloth – Price: $54.00
ISBN: 978-0-8248-3986-4

In this pioneering study of the shifting status of the emperor within court society and the relationship between the state and the Buddhist community during the Heian period (794–1185), Asuka Sango details the complex ways in which the emperor and other elite ruling groups employed Buddhist ritual to legitimate their authority. Although considered a descendant of the sun goddess, Amaterasu, the emperor used Buddhist idiom, particularly the ideal king as depicted in the Golden Light Sūtra, to express his right to rule. Sango’s book is the first to focus on the ideals presented in the sūtra to demonstrate how the ritual enactment of imperial authority was essential to justifying political power. These ideals became the basis of a number of court-sponsored rituals, the most important of which was the emperor’s Misai-e Assembly.

Sango deftly traces the changes in the assembly’s format and status throughout the era and the significant shifts in the Japanese polity that mirrored them. In illuminating the details of these changes, she challenges dominant scholarly models that presume the gradual decline of the political and liturgical influence of the emperor over the course of the era. She also compels a reconsideration of Buddhism during the Heian as “state Buddhism” by showing that monks intervened in creating the state’s policy toward the religion to their own advantage. Her analysis further challenges the common view that Buddhism of the time was characterized by the growth of private esoteric rites at the expense of exoteric doctrinal learning.

The Halo of Golden Light draws on a wide range of primary sources—from official annals and diaries written by courtiers and monks to ecclesiastical records and Buddhist texts—many of them translated or analyzed for the first time in English. In so doing, the work brings to the surface surprising facets in the negotiations between religious ideas and practices and the Buddhist community and the state.

Fun Link Friday: Dahl’s Japan

With apologies for getting political, I just came across these English-language political cartoons from the Japan Times, and (if you are politically aligned with their positions) they are just wonderful.

As his bio on the Japan Times website says, “Roger Dahl has been contributing editorial cartoons and his Zero Gravity strip for The Japan Times since 1991. He also is an illustrator; his most recent project, a children’s book called “Wisha Wozzariter” (Penguin Publishing), was released in 2012. An American from Seattle, he is a graduate of the University of Washington.”

Here are some of my favorite recent strips from Dahl’s Japan:

For more, check out Dahl’s Japan, at the Japan Times.

Dahl also has another strip at the Japan Times called Zero Gravity.

Political opinions expressed or implied here are only those of the author (Toranosuke) and do not necessarily reflect the views of Shinpai Deshou as a whole, or of its other contributors.

Book Announcement: A Cultural History of Translation in Early Modern Japan

A cultural historyThe translation of texts has played a formative role in Japan’s history of cultural exchange as well as the development of literature, and indigenous legal and religious systems. This is the first book of its kind, however, to offer a comprehensive survey of the role of translation in Japan during the Tokugawa period, 1600-1868. By examining a wide range of translations into Japanese from Chinese, Dutch and other European texts, as well as the translation of classical Japanese into the vernacular, Rebekah Clements reveals the circles of intellectual and political exchange that existed in early modern Japan, arguing that, contrary to popular belief, Japan’s ‘translation’ culture did not begin in the Meiji period. Examining the ‘crisis translation’ of military texts in response to international threats to security in the nineteenth century, Clements also offers fresh insights into the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1868.
