Summary of Duties
The International Programs Global Learning (IP-GL) Advisor is an integral member of the Office of International Programs and GL team who facilitates educational opportunities for WSU students at home and abroad. Global Learning Advisors perform essential functions which may include but are not limited to:
1) advising students on Global Learning opportunities including education abroad, global studies minor, global leadership certificate and global case competition,
2) providing oversight to the IP/GL Peer Advisor and Ambassador programs, and
3) facilitating Global Learning outreach activities with other IP departments and WSU programs and
4) managing GL participation with various social media platforms.
GL Advisors collaborate with other IP staff and WSU colleges, departments and individual faculty members to achieve global and cultural competencies.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

Additional Requirements

  • Experience in higher education administration, teaching, or student services.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills or experience.
  • Public Speaking experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency/skills using Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with web-based search tools and applications.
  • Willingness and ability to work outside of regular business hours of operation, including during evenings and on weekends as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international education and advising.
  • Experience coordinating social media,outreach and peer education programs.
  • Experience working higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience that includes international work or travel or education abroad.

Program Coordinator – International Services
Lasell College is searching for a talented individual to join the College community in the position of Program Coordinator in the Office of International Services. This 12-month, full-time staff position joins the staff in International Services in providing comprehensive direct service to the undergraduate and graduate international student population at Lasell College; implementing and enhancing the College’s study abroad programs (including internships abroad); and coordinating and supporting the College’s short-term international programs, including international service-learning experiences. The position reports to the Director of International Services. This position will be available June 1, 2015; start date is negotiable, but no later than August 1, 2015.
Responsibilities include: work directly with undergraduate and graduate F-1 visa holders (including: assistance SEVIS-related paperwork, helping to ensure compliance with all federal guidelines, provision of general immigration advising); consult with Offices of Undergraduate and Graduate Admission, as needed; take the lead role in designing and implementing International Student Orientation; provide programming and counseling for the international student population; consult with faculty and staff on transitional issues for international students; assist Director the collection and maintenance of pertinent data re: international students; assist Director with the evaluation/assessment/vetting of study abroad programs/affiliates; with Director, work closely with academic deans/department chairs/advisors to successfully integrate study abroad activities into new core curriculum; advise students on study abroad opportunities; and assist in the administration of the College’s international service learning trips.

Qualifications: a bachelor’s degree in international education, intercultural relations,counseling, student development, higher education, or a related field is required, along with 1 – 3 years of direct experience advising international students.

Preferred candidates will have a master’s degree in one of the above-noted disciplines, and will also have experience in study abroad along with personal international travel experience, and will be familiar with SEVIS and immigration regulations. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to handle multiple assignments concurrently; must be self-starting and able to work collaboratively with all of the various constituencies within the College community; and must demonstrate programming and administrative skills. Book Announcement: Environment and Society in the Japanese Islands

EnvironmentOver the long course of Japan’s history, its people profited from their rich natural environment while simultaneously facing significant environmental challenges. Over time, they have altered their natural environment in numerous ways, from landscape modification to industrial pollution. How has the human-nature relationship changed over time in Japan? How does Japan’s environmental history compare with that of other countries, or that of the world as a whole?

Environment and Society in the Japanese Islands attempts to answer these questions through a series of case studies by leading Japanese and Western historians, geographers, archaeologists, and climatologists. These essays, on diverse topics from all periods of Japanese history and prehistory, are unified by their focus on the key concepts of “resilience” and “risk mitigation.” Taken as a whole, they place Japan’s experience in global context and call into question the commonly presumed division between pre-modern and modern environmental history.

It’s mid-May around Matsue Castle, as spring is practically running to summer now. First there were plum blossoms, then came camellia, then cherry blossoms, then azalea and peonies, and now it appears something else is waking up in the warm weather.

….What could it be? That’s what many people wanted to know back when it was introduced to Japan, leading to its common name, nanjyamonjya (or nanjamonja by more common romanization), which I’ve chosen to translate as “what-the-tree-is-this.”

Resource: Brower Fund Collection of karuta cards

In case you’re crazy about playing the karuta card game or just the Hyakunin isshū poetry compositions, you might be interested in these public-use images from the University of Michigan’s Brower Fund Collection. These playing cards date to the mid-19th century and include beautiful calligraphy and illustrations. The site provides information on the individual poems, and even provides the 1917 translations of each poem by Clay MacCauley. There are high-quality images that are easy to download and browse through.

Funding: Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies [UK]

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of the Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies, a postgraduate programme  to support the study of Japanese Studies in either Japan or the UK.

We gratefully acknowledge additional support for this programme from Daiwa Securities Group Inc.

The intention is to support six individuals in any given year, of whom at least three must study full-time at a university in Japan.

Applications are now invited for the Programme’s first year.

Eligibility

Candidates for the Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies must be:

– British citizens

– holders of an Honours degree in Japanese Studies, defined as a course focussing primarily on the study of Japan, and containing a substantial Japanese language component

– enrolled* or enrolling in a Japanese Studies-related course in either Japan or the UK. (Applicants need not have identified a precise university, course or supervisor at the time of applying.)

 

*Please note that Scholarships will not be granted in arrears.

Scholarships will not be awarded to former recipients of Daiwa Scholarships or to the same individual more than once.

 Condition of Scholarship

 – Those Scholars affiliated to UK universities must undertake at least part of their studies in Japan.

– Scholarships will be awarded to cover the whole period required to attain the degree in question. In cases where the applicant has already begun his or her studies, the Scholarship will fund the whole remaining period required.

– The Scholarship will cover university fees for the course in question, plus living expenses. Living expenses will be payable at a rate of £1,000 per month for periods spent in the UK, and ¥260,000 per month for periods spent in Japan.

– The Foundation will pay one economy class return air fare between the UK and Japan per Scholar per annum.

– Continuation of funding will be conditional on satisfactory progress being made. Scholars will be required to submit annual progress reports to the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.

– Amounts payable to Scholars in receipt of other funding (e.g., Great Britain-Sasakawa Foundation, JSPS, Japan Foundation,  university scholarships or bursaries) will be reduced by the amount of this other funding.

– Scholarships will not be granted in arrears.

–  Scholarships will not be awarded to former recipients of Daiwa Scholarships or to the same individual more than once.

Book Announcement: Imagining Exile in Heian Japan: banishment in law, literature, and cult

Imagining ExileFor over three hundred years during the Heian period (794–1185), execution was customarily abolished in favor of banishment. During the same period, exile emerged widely as a concern within literature and legend, in poetry and diaries, and in the cultic imagination, as expressed in oracles and revelations. While exile was thus one sanction available to the state, it was also something more: a powerful trope through which members of court society imagined the banishment of gods and heavenly beings, of legendary and literary characters, and of historical figures, some transformed into spirits.

This compelling and well-researched volume is the first in English to explore the rich resonance of exile in the cultural life of the Japanese court. Rejecting the notion that such narratives merely reflect a timeless literary archetype, Jonathan Stockdale shows instead that in every case narratives of exile emerged from particular historical circumstances—moments in which elites in the capital sought to reveal and to re-imagine their world and the circulation of power within it. By exploring the relationship of banishment to the structures of inclusion and exclusion upon which Heian court society rested, Stockdale moves beyond the historiographical discussion of “center and margin” to offer instead a theory of exile itself.

Stockdale’s arguments are situated in astute and careful readings of Heian sources. His analysis of a literary narrative, the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, for example, shows how Kaguyahime’s exile from the “Capital of the Moon” to earth implicitly portrays the world of the Heian court as a polluted periphery. His exploration of one of the most well-known historical instances of banishment, that of Sugawara Michizane, illustrates how the political sanction of exile could be met with a religious rejoinder through which an exiled noble is reinstated in divine form, first as a vengeful spirit and then as a deity worshipped at the highest levels of court society.

Imagining Exile in Heian Japan is a model of interdisciplinary scholarship that will appeal to anyone interested in the interwoven connections among the literature, politics, law, and religion of early and classical Japan.
