Call for Papers: The Lessons of Fukushima

The Lessons of Fukushima
Willamette University
February 24-25, 2012

The disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit northern Japan on March 11, 2011 drew the immediate attention and sympathy of the international community. Successive meltdowns and malfunctions at the Fukushima nuclear power plants heightened global concern and the disaster continues to unfold one year later with no end in sight. The Fukushima disasters present challenges not only to the Japanese people and nation-state, but to the world at large.

What can we learn from Fukushima?  What is our collective responsibility as educators, activists, and citizens in the face of this natural and human tragedy?  In presenting this symposium, we seek to identify and learn from the global lessons of Fukushima.

We invite scholars, community advocates, and government representatives to submit proposals for papers that address the broad theme of “The Lessons of Fukushima” as relevant to Japan, the U.S., or other world areas. We intend the symposium to function as a vehicle for education and collaboration; we hope to inspire both interdisciplinary and inter-agency conversations.

Interested respondents should submit a 250-word abstract of the proposed paper to Cecily McCaffrey at cmccaffr@willamette.edu by December 1, 2011. Invitations to the symposium will be issued by December 15, 2011.

Call for Papers: Deception: 12th EASGSC

University of Toronto, 10 March 2012

The 12th Annual East Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference, University of Toronto, 10 March 2012

We are currently seeking original academic papers on the theme of “deception”.

Establishing as our starting point the distinction between truth and falsehood, we are interested in the question of how and to what purposes tht distinction might be intentionally blurred. We welcome contributions that discuss the human, and also non-human, faculty to deceive, as well as the human potential to be deceived. Deception can take the form of propaganda or a glance, an image or an utterance, a presence or an absence, a ploy or a pledge, an action or a silence.

The question of deception invites a multitude of discussions: political, linguistic, artistic, cultural, historical, anthropological, philosophical, psychological, and many more besides.

Thus we welcome papers from any and all disciplines willing and able to engage academically in the issues, intricacies, and illuminations of the topic of deception in an East Asian context, from the ways deception is defined and figured in East Asian societies and cultures, to the very workings of deception in the figuring and definition of East Asia.

For those interested, we request that you provide an abstract (300 words maximum) as well as your personal and contact information by December 15, 2011.

Submissions from both individuals and panels of three (panelists should send individual abstracts and a panel abstract) are encouraged.

Submitted papers are also eligible for consideration for the East Asia Forum, a journal edited and published by graduate students in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto. Please indicate whether you wish to have your completed paper considered for publication.

Selected participants will be asked to submit completed papers by February 15, 2012. Those who wish their papers to be considered for publication should submit a publication-ready copy (about 4000 words) by March 31, 2012. During the conference, participants will be given 20 minutes to present their work; actual presentation papers should be about 1500-2500 words long.

Please e-mail submissions and queries to eas.gsc@utoronto.ca. Further information as it becomes available will be posted on the conference website at http://groups.chass.utoronto.ca/easgsc/.

Are you a high school student or teacher of high school students interested in international exchange with Japan? If so, check out the High School Diplomats program offered every summer at Princeton University for a wonderful opportunity to expand horizons and enjoy ten days living and learning with Japanese students. The deadline for applying to participate in the 2012 program is January 8th, so check out their official website for details!

——

High School Diplomats:
A cultural exchange program between Japanese and American HS students

Some people say it changed their life. Many say it changed the way they viewed the world and the people living in it. And pretty much everyone says “it was the best ten days of my life.”

What is it, you ask? It is High School Diplomats, a cultural exchange program between American and Japanese high school students. It is a full-scholarship* program that gives 40 American students the chance to build relationships with people from another country and learn another culture firsthand. And most importantly, it is a once in a lifetime experience that opens kids’ eyes to a whole new perspective on the world, while also helping them learn more about themselves.

For the past 25 years, AIU Insurance and the Freeman Foundation have sponsored the High School Diplomats program. 40 sophomore and junior high school students are selected from all across the country to come to Princeton University, where they are paired up with a Japanese high school student based on similarities in personality and interests/hobbies. For ten days, the students attend language and cultural classes, and participate in a mixture of academic discussions, presentations and fun activities.

High School Diplomats is a summer program like no other because between all of the fun activities, all the classes, and all the meals, the students are overcoming language barriers** and cultural differences, and forming lifelong relationships and friendships.

If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to e-mail us at semarklin@highschooldiplomats.com, or visit our site at http://www.highschooldiplomats.com for more information. Additional videos describing the program can be found on our YouTube account at http://www.youtube.com/HighSchoolDiplomats

Sincerely,
The HSD Staff
