Fun Link Friday: “A Fabulous Experience” Rotary Youth Exchange

This week’s fun link is about Rotary International Youth Exchange. This year, they are celebrating 50 years of the program in Japan which began with exchanges to Australia.

Watch a short video on vimeo as Yoko Sekimoto recalls her “fabulous experience” with Youth Exchange in 1962, when she became the first Japanese student to participate in Rotary Youth Exchange.

In celebration of New Generations Month, on September 12th, past participants shared a positive Rotary Youth Exchange memory or benefit to participating in an exchange on social media. On Twitter, check out #YEXmoment.

It’s an interesting way to reflect on student exchange, especially for me because I was a Rotary exchange student to Japan from 2002-03 in Kameoka, Kyoto. My family has been involved with Rotary for many years. My home club and host club were both wonderful groups of people, who kindly supported me. Before leaving for my exchange, I met a Japanese woman who had come to my hometown in Pennsylvania on a Rotary exchange in high school.  This was back when it took a month by ship. She was visiting old friends and knew some of my grandparents’ generation, too. I remember being impressed that their friendship had endured over the decades. When I was in Japan, she invited me to her home in Yokohama and helped with negotiating the trip with my host club. I had my first Tokyo experience thanks to her!

If you missed Youth Exchange social media day, I invite you to post in the comments about your positive experience with Rotary!

Travis has some great thoughts about how we use blogging in a public forum versus our responsibilities to sensitive writing writing and research as scholars. Check it out!

Travis's avatar上り口説 Nubui Kuduchi

When we post online about our research topics, or about things we’ve discovered in the course of our research, how much is too much? Where should we draw the line? What should we and should we not share, in order to protect ourselves professionally?

When we write papers, we of course do not write that paper in a public place, such as a blog or a Wiki, while we’re working on it, nor do we post the completed paper online afterwards,* especially if we’re looking to ever develop that paper further, into a dissertation, or into something to get published. There’s too much danger of being accused of plagiarizing yourself (however that works – I have a hard time wrapping my head around precisely why that’s wrong, even though I sense strongly that it is), and, I suppose, if one is worried about such things, too much danger of someone…

Book Announcement: Optical Allusions: Screens, Paintings, and Poetry in Classical Japan (ca. 800-1200)

In Optical Allusions: Screens, Paintings, and Poetry in Classical Japan (ca. 800-1200), Joseph T. Sorensen illustrates how, on both the theoretical and the practical level, painted screens and other visual art objects helped define some of the essential characteristics of Japanese court poetry. In his examination of the important genre later termed screen poetry, Sorensen employs ekphrasis (the literary description of a visual art object) as a framework to analyze poems composed on or for painted screens. He provides close readings of poems and their social, political, and cultural contexts to argue the importance of the visual arts in the formation of Japanese poetics and poetic conventions.
