Symposium: Reconsidering Asian Material Texts

call for papers [150-2]April 19-20, 2013

This symposium invites a reconsideration of the place and meaning of the “material text” in East and South Asia.  Some of the questions that will be addressed in the presentations and study sessions include:  How do we evaluate sutras, manuscripts, printed books, magazines, and even fakes as “material texts”?  How did these materials bear meaning in their contexts, and what can they reveal to us today, in form, content and reception?   What can we learn about reading and representation through these material texts?  How has the history of the material text in Asia been written and what place does the text have, in the pre-modern, modern and contemporary world?  What methods are useful for our engagement (and what may be less so)?  By asking these questions and others, the symposium aims to bring forward new approaches to the history of the material text in Asia.

The program will feature presentations as well as opportunities for viewing material texts selected from the Penn Museum and the University of Pennsylvania Libraries.  The symposium is open to the public, but due to space availability, the number of participants is limited and advance registration is required:  http://asianmaterialtexts.eventbrite.com/

Call for Applications: Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research: Inter-Asian Contexts and Connections, SSRC

Call for Applications

Social Science Research Council
Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research: Inter-Asian Contexts and Connections

Preliminary proposals due March 29, 2013

The SSRC is pleased to offer continued support for its Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research program. Following on a successful pilot phase in which 19 individual fellowships were awarded, the SSRC plans to offer 15-20 fellowships in 2013-2014.

These fellowships are aimed at supporting transregional research under the rubric “Inter-Asian Contexts and Connections”. Their purpose is to strengthen the understanding of issues and geographies that do not fit neatly into existing divisions of academia or the world and to develop new approaches, practices, and opportunities in international, regional, and area studies in the United States. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, these fellowships will continue to help junior scholars (those at the postdoctoral stage, one to seven years out of the PhD) complete first books and/or undertake second projects. In addition to funding research, the program will create networks and shared resources that will support Fellows well beyond the grant period. The Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research will thus provide promising scholars important support at critical junctures in their careers.

The intellectual thrust of the project will continue to be the re-conceptualization of Asia as an interlinked historical and geographic formation stretching from the Middle East through Eurasia, Central Asia, and South Asia to Southeast Asia and East Asia.

Proposals submitted for the fellowship competition should bear upon processes that connect places and peoples (such as migration, media, and resource flows) as well as those that reconfigure local and trans-local contexts (such as shifting borders, urbanization, and social movements). The broad focus of the program is intended to advance transregional research as well as to establish structures for linking scholars across disciplines in the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences.

Applications and additional fellowship details, including a list of our current fellows and answers to frequently asked questions, are available on the program website at: http://www.ssrc.org/fellowships/transregional-research-fellowship

Book Announcement: Rewriting Medieval Japanese Women: Politics, Personality, and Literary Production in the Life of Nun Abutsu

9780824835651Rewriting Medieval Japanese Women: Politics, Personality, and Literary Production in the Life of Nun Abutsu
Author: Laffin, Christina;

Rewriting Medieval Japanese Women explores the world of thirteenth-century Japan through the life of a prolific noblewoman known as Nun Abutsu (1225–1283). Abutsu crossed gender and genre barriers by writing the first career guide for Japanese noblewomen, the first female-authored poetry treatise, and the first poetic travelogue by a woman—all despite the increasingly limited social mobility for women during the Kamakura era (1185–1336). Capitalizing on her literary talent and political prowess, Abutsu rose from middling origins and single-motherhood to a prestigious marriage and membership in an esteemed literary lineage.

Abutsu’s life is well documented in her own letters, diaries, and commentaries, as well as in critiques written by rivals, records of poetry events, and legal documents. Drawing on these and other literary and historiographical sources, including The Tale of Genji, author Christina Laffin demonstrates how medieval women responded to institutional changes that transformed their lives as court attendants, wives, and nuns. Despite increased professionalization of the arts, competition over sources of patronage, and rivaling claims to literary expertise, Abutsu proved her poetic capabilities through her work and often used patriarchal ideals of femininity to lay claim to political and literary authority.

Rewriting Medieval Japanese Women effectively challenges notions that literary salons in Japan were a phenomenon limited to the Heian period (794–1185) and that literary writing and scholarship were the domain of men during the Kamakura era. Its analysis of literary works within the context of women’s history makes clear the important role that medieval women and their cultural contributions continued to play in Japanese history.

Japanese architect Toyo Ito has been named as the 2013 laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Read the announcement and see a visual overview of his life’s work, including the Sendai Mediatheque library (which survived the 2011 earthquake), on Dezeen.

He calls the Sendai Mediatheque, completed in 2001 in Sendai City, Miyagi, Japan, one of the high points of his career. In the Phaidon book, Toyo Ito, he explains, “The Mediatheque differs from conventional public buildings in many ways. While the building principally functions as a library and art gallery, the administration has actively worked to relax divisions between diverse programmes, removing fixed barriers between various media to progressively evoke an image of how cultural facilities should be from now on.”
