Fun Link Friday: Send Your Haiku to Mars!

mavenCheck out this announcement from NASA, released at the beginning of May. Ever stop and think, ‘Man, would I love to send a haiku to Mars!’ Yeah, me too, every day. We all do, amirite? Sadly the deadline to submit your own haiku was July 1st, but starting on the 15th you’ll be able to vote for the winners! They won’t be posted until then, but I’m really curious what they’ll be. Keep yours eyes open!

NASA Invites Public to Send Names And Messages to Mars

WASHINGTON —  NASA is inviting members of the public to submit their names and a personal message online for a DVD to be carried aboard a spacecraft that will study the Martian upper atmosphere.

The DVD will be in NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, which is scheduled for launch in November. The DVD is part of the mission’s Going to Mars Campaign coordinated at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (CU/LASP).

The DVD will carry every name submitted. The public also is encouraged to submit a message in the form of a three-line poem, or haiku. However, only three haikus will be selected. The deadline for all submissions is July 1. An online public vote to determine the top three messages to be placed on the DVD will begin July 15.

“The Going to Mars campaign offers people worldwide a way to make a personal connection to space, space exploration, and science in general, and share in our excitement about the MAVEN mission,” said Stephanie Renfrow, lead for the MAVEN Education and Public Outreach program at CU/LASP.

Participants who submit their names to the Going to Mars campaign will be able to print a certificate of appreciation to document their involvement with the MAVEN mission.

“This new campaign is a great opportunity to reach the next generation of explorers and excite them about science, technology, engineering and math,” said Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN principal investigator from CU/LASP. “I look forward to sharing our science with the worldwide community as MAVEN begins to piece together what happened to the Red Planet’s atmosphere.”

MAVEN is the first spacecraft devoted to exploring and understanding the Martian upper atmosphere. The spacecraft will investigate how the loss of Mars’ atmosphere to space determined the history of water on the surface.

“This mission will continue NASA’s rich history of inspiring and engaging the public in spaceflight in ongoing Mars exploration,” said David Mitchell, MAVEN project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

MAVEN’s principal investigator is based at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. The university will provide science operations, science instruments and lead Education and Public Outreach. Goddard manages the project and provides two of the science instruments for the mission. Lockheed Martin of Littleton, Colo., built the spacecraft and is responsible for mission operations. The University of California at Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory provides science instruments for the mission. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., provides navigation support, the Deep Space Network and the Electra telecommunications relay hardware and operations.

Job Openings: Asian Topics, Post-Doctoral Fellowships

job opening - 5Institution:  Nanyang Technological University, School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Location:   Singapore
Position:   Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Applications are now open!

Closing Date: 31st July 2013.

As a young and dynamic institution, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) at Nanyang Technological University is pleased to announce that seven Postdoctoral Fellowships are to be awarded in July/August 2013. Four of these fellowships are to be hosted at the School-level research clusters including:

1) Global Asia

a) Conceptualizing Asia in Global Interactions: In the globalized world where goods, capital, people, and knowledge seem to exchanged seamlessly, we are no doubt presented with the image of an open world.
How is Asia positioned or conceptualized in this global exchange? What are the stakes involved in these global interactions? How do we now define “Asian” cultural notions, practices and ideas?

b) Asia;s globalising universities and the languages of education: In the twenty-first century there is great pressure on universities in the region to go global with student intake and staff outreach, and to compete on a regional and international scale in the global rankings competition. This has typically led to an increased emphasis on the English language as the lingua franca of higher education in such societies as Hong Kong, India, Singapore, and the Philippines, and the introduction of English-medium programs in China, Korea, and Japan. While the motivation for this is clear, it has also been argued that this push for English in higher education has diverted awareness away from the linguistic ecology of languages in Asia itself. This topic will explore the complex of issues related to such issues, with particular reference to recent developments in Southeast and East Asia.

2) Literary and Cultural Studies

Singapore cultural studies: The candidate should have expertise in Singapore cultural studies, concentrating on the contemporary arts and cultural production, particularly (but not exclusively) work with a focus on theatre performance, situated in the multi-cultural and  multi-lingual contexts of Singapore, as well as in the larger contexts of Southeast and East Asia. Bilingual ability in English and Chinese is required.

3) China and Globalization

The candidate will undertake interdisciplinary and transnational research pertaining to China’s changing and complex roles in globalization, including, among other things, international migration, emerging soft power and public diplomacy, identity formations and transformations, and new patterns of governance. (PI: Professor Liu Hong

4) Sino-Southeast Asian interactions and/or Chinese migration (funded by Centre for Chinese Language and Culture)

The candidate will undertake interdisciplinary and empirical research on China’s changing interactions with Southeast Asia over the past century and the role of Chinese migration in shaping these interactions. The issues can be approached from historical, literary, socio-economic and political perspectives. The ability to use Chinese language materials for research is required.

Eligibility:

The successful candidates are expected to undertake cutting-edge research in one of the chosen fields either jointly with the NTU counterparts or independently as well as to assist research clusters research activities such as organizing workshops. Subject to mutual agreement, postdoctoral fellows may undertake some light teaching, no more than one course per academic year, in a relevant disciplinary department at HSS.

Duration: One year (renewable for up to another year, subject to funding availability and performance appraisal)

Salary: Competitive remuneration plus research expense support

Application Procedure

Interested candidates are invited to send a complete Curriculum Vita
including a cover letter and the attached official application form
