Location: South Puget Sound Community College, Olympia, Washington Salary: This is a full time faculty, tenure track position. Salary is $47,521.00 per contract year (177 days)
South Puget Sound Community College anticipates an opening for a Japanese Professor and seeks to establish a pool of qualified candidates for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Essential Functions/Typical Duties:
- Teaching a range of Japanese courses
- Developing and modifying curriculum for face-to-face and online environments
- Academic advising of students
- Participating actively in instructional assessment
- Serving on college committees
- Participating in various college activities
- Building a world language network within the local community and particularly with the Japanese-speaking community
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Japanese, Japanese literature or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Preparation for or experience in teaching the 100-200 college-level courses in Japanese.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates must include responses to the following attributes required of an effective Japanese Professor:
- Native or near native fluency in Japanese.
- Evidence of knowledge of Japanese culture and literature and of a commitment to teaching language within its cultural context.
- Evidence of experience in curriculum development within these areas of expertise.
- Experience teaching Japanese, particularly at a community college.
- Evidence of teaching excellence and commitment to student retention and success.
- Understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy.
- Knowledge of and experience in responding to the needs of today’s learners, including, but not limited to, the use of technology.
- Evidence of ability in and commitment to working with students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, needs and goals.
- Knowledge of or experience in alternative modes of instruction, in language learning centers or with integrative teaching strategies: team teaching, internet – or computer-assisted instruction, hybrid classes (combined face-to-face and online instruction), or outcomes-based instruction.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with assessment of student learning and department/program effectiveness.
- Evidence of success in collaborating and/or leading departmental, division, or college-wide projects/committee work.
