Fun Link Friday: Japanese Children’s Games

Wanna play ____?

For many kids around the world, recess is the highlight of their school day. But the way they spend this treasured time differs from country to country, region to region and even school to school.

Japanese elementary school children love a lot of games that might be familiar abroad — tag, hide’n’go seek, cops and robbers, dodgeball, and jump rope are just a few you might find yourself watching nostalgiclly on the playgrounds there. However if a group of children came over an invited you to join them in a round of guriko, hanaichimonme, fruit basket, or takeuma you might be at a loss.

For those interested in learning about some of Japan’s most popular children’s games, check out the website Genki Morimori . The site is aimed at Japanese teachers and parents looking for game ideas, so you can practice your Japanese while reading up on the games. Each game is explained with multiple pictures and clearly detailed rules. Many also have a video (filled with laughing excited children!) to show you exactly how the game works. If you’re still struggling to understand all the rules don’t give up, you might be able to find English information about the game online if you run a search on the game name in romaji. You’ll be playing in no time!

Game entry with a photo, video, printable instructions and a summary of the game

So whether you’re looking for a game to play at international night at an elementary school, at a Japan Club get together or in your Japanese class, why not try a round of janken tsunagari oni next time?

Call For Papers: Asian Studies Conference Japan 2011

The Executive Committee of the Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers to be presented at the Sixteenth Asian Studies Conference Japan, to be held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, on Saturday and Sunday, June 30-July 1, 2012.

The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2011. Results will be announced before the end of December.

The online application forms are available on the ASCJ website. These forms set out the requirements for individual paper proposals, panel proposals, and roundtable proposals:
http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~ascj/

Panels are proposed by individual scholars around a common subject. Panels are composed of three or four paper presenters and one or more discussants. Panel proposals should include a 250 word (maximum) abstract from each participant as well as a 250 word (maximum) statement that explains the session as a whole.

Roundtables offer an opportunity for participants to discuss a specific theme, issue or significant recent publication. A maximum of six active participants is recommended. While a roundtable proposal will not be as detailed as a panel proposal, it should explain fully the purpose, themes or issues, and scope of the session.

Individual papers give scholars an opportunity to participate in the conference even if they are not able to put together a complete panel.

Since only a limited number of individual papers can be accommodated, preference will be given to junior scholars. Applicants have a better chance of acceptance as part of a panel.

Paper proposals should include a 250 word (maximum) abstract.

Please note that no person can appear on the program more than once. The one exception is the doubling up of roles within a given panel (organizer/chair for example, or organizer/presenter).

The Executive Committee encourages members to submit proposals that, by focusing on more than one region or by drawing on more than one discipline, will attract a broad range of scholarly interest. Suggestions for innovative alternatives to the panels, individual papers and roundtables described above are also encouraged.

We often hear from individuals who would like to form a panel, but are short of one or two presenters. To make a  “call for co-panelists” through our Twitter feed, see:
