Conference: International Conference on Asian Food Security (ICAFS)

call for papers [150-2]2014 Towards Asia 2025: Policy and Technology Imperatives, 21 22 August 2014, Singapore

Asia faces serious challenges to its food security. Changing demographics and consumption patterns, productivity decline in agriculture, degradation of natural resource base, food price volatility, rising input costs, as well as transformation of supply chains and the supermarket phenomenon, are but a few of these. Add to this the various anticipated short- to medium-term trends, and it becomes clear that focused efforts towards mitigating the challenges are urgently needed.

In light of prevailing and foreseeable trends that have direct consequences for the regions food security, the second International Conference on Asian Food Security (ICAFS) organised by the RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies will focus strongly on Asias response towards the thinking horizon of 2025.

Specifically, ICAFS2014 seeks to:
– Suggest recommendations that contribute towards enhancing food security at the national and regional levels, and identify clear policy directions and interventions to guide efforts towards food security.
– Provide concrete and actionable policy recommendations attuned to the new realities of food security challenges as Asia approaches 2025.
– Identify ways in which Asia could position itself to maximise the full benefits of its connectivity and build on its comparative advantage within and vis–vis other regions.

ICAFS2014 will be a key forum to meet and discuss the issues and drivers of Asian food security with leading government policy, business and development experts from the Asian Development Bank, the International Food Policy Research Institute, Syngenta, the Indonesian Food Security Agency, Indian and Chinese food experts, and many others.

This conference is a must for all involved with planning, designing and developing policies and strategies to cope with the changing Asian agri-food landscape. ICAFS is aimed at all those with leadership responsibilities to understand and address these changes. It will be especially useful for government leaders, agri-food industry experts, civil societies and NGOs,
members of academia, and representatives of investment entities.

Dates: Friday, June 20 through Thursday, July 10, 2014

Eligibility for Admission: To qualify for admission, an applicant must

Aims and focus:

•   This course will train students to be able to read early modern (_kinsei_) and modern (_kindai_) kanbun writings with the aid of dictionaries and without reference to transliterations/translations into Japanese (_yomikudashibun_) of the kanbun texts.

•   Students will learn old forms of kanji (_kyūjitai_), epistolary style Japanese (_sōrōbun_), and the Japanese way of reading Chinese writing (_kundokutai_).

•    As for kanbun texts from the medieval (_chūsei_) period and earlier, because specialized background knowledge is required, the course will train students to understand such texts while making reference to _yomikudashibun_.

•   The class will be conducted entirely in Japanese. A high level of proficiency in reading and speaking Japanese is needed.

Fun Link Friday: The 47 Bronin

Jamie Noguchi of the webcomic Yellow Peril has created one of the best webcomic fillers I’ve ever seen: the tale of the 47 “bronin,” or the classic tale of Lord Asano’s ronin exacting revenge on Lord Kira– but with bros, fistbumps, and dropping the bass.

It was the Brokugawa Period, a golden age of fistbumps and sweet ass parties. The sun hung brightly in the sky like a disco ball the day that the Brogun chose Dude Brosano and Dude Bromei to host a sweet ass party for the Emperor at Brogun Castle in Edo.

Brokugawa period, though. (Hat tip to L!)
