Book Announcement: Meiji Restoration Losers: Memory and Tokugawa Supporters in Modern Japan

MeijiMeiji Restoration Losers: Memory and Tokugawa Supporters in Modern Japan, published through the Harvard Asia Center, is now available.

This book is about the “losers” of the Meiji Restoration and the supporters who promoted their legacy. Although the violence of the Meiji Restoration is typically downplayed, the trauma was real, and those who felt marginalized from the mainstream throughout modern Japan looked to these losers as models of action. Using a wide range of sources, from essays by former Tokugawa supporters like Fukuzawa Yukichi to postwar film and “lost decade” manga, Michael Wert traces the shifting portrayals of Restoration losers. By highlighting the overlooked sites of memory such as legends about buried gold, the awarding of posthumous court rank, or fighting over a disembodied head, Wert illustrates how the process of commemoration and rehabilitation allows individuals a voice in the formation of national history. He argues that the commingling of local memory activists with nationally known politicians, academics, writers, and treasure hunters formed interconnecting memory landscapes that promoted local figures as potential heroes in modern Japan.

Fun Link Friday: Map Design by Yoshida Hatsusaburo

Spoon & Tamago has a feature on the cartographer Yoshida Hatsusaburo (1884-1955) and his gorgeous, detailed maps. I love the Taisho- and early Showa-era design work on these, and how much they look like real towns instead of a contemporary “flat” map.

Yoshida’s birthday was March 4, and there was a Google doodle on google.co.jp in his honor.

Book Announcement: “The Mysterious Underground Men”

MysteriousAnnouncing the publication of the English-language edition of one of Tezuka Osamu’s earliest books, and one of manga history’s most important: “The Mysterious Underground Men” (Chiteikoku no kaijin, 1948), published by PictureBox in New York.

http://www.pictureboxinc.com/products/1196-the-mysterious-undergound-men

The edition is in color, akahon duotone. It was produced by scanning an original 1948 copy of the book on loan from Tezuka Productions in Tokyo. Nothing this close to an archival edition exists even in Japan. The volume also includes a translation of a a short article about the work by Tezuka from 1982, and an introductory essay.

Originally published in Osaka in 1948, The Mysterious Underground Men tells the story of Mimio the talking rabbit, as he struggles to prove his humanity while helping his friends save earth from an invasion of angry humanoid ants. While Tezuka’sNew Treasure Island (1946-47) was the first major hit for the “god of manga,” the artist himself regarded this later book the first of his signature “story manga. Inspired by Bernhard Kellermann’s Der Tunnel (1913) and drawing widely on European and American science fiction, as well as Milt Gross’ own pioneering “graphic novel,” He Done Her Wrong (1930), this full-color edition of The Mysterious Underground Men will not only introduce to English-language readers a founding monument in modern Japanese comics. It will also offer a rare glimpse at the wide-ranging Western cultural sources that made up young Tezuka’s world.

This is the second volume in the “Ten-Cent Manga” series, which focuses on the impact of American comics and popular culture upon Japanese manga. The first volume, Sugiura Shigeru’s “The Last of the Mohicans,” was released this past summer.

Fun Link Friday: Tokyo’s Best Plum Blossom Spots

I’ll confess that I have a personal bias for plum blossoms over sakura. Sure, they aren’t as majestic as the shidare-zakura (枝垂桜), but I love how vividly pink they are and how they smell. I’m most familiar with Kanazawa’s plum groves (where they bloom in March), but whether you’re in Tokyo or just love photos of plum blossoms, check out Rurousha’s post on the best places in the city to see them:

Just be warned that plum blossoms are not remotely as spectacular as cherry blossoms. A single tree doesn’t have as many blossoms, the trees don’t bloom en masse at the same time, it’s usually freezing cold with a depressing grey sky in February. The blossoms do have a lovely fragrance, and if you focus on close-ups, you’ll see their beauty.
