Call for Papers: Asian Studies Conference Japan, June 20-21, 2015

call for papers [150-2]Call for Papers: ASCJ 2015

The Executive Committee of the Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers to be presented at the Nineteenth Asian Studies Conference Japan. The conference will be held on the Shirokane campus of Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo on Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21, 2015. All presentations are in English.

Please visit the ASCJ website for details: http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~ascj/

Proposals may be submitted online beginning on September 1, 2014.

The deadline for proposals is October 15. Results will be announced in December.

The online application forms are available on the ASCJ website: http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/%7Eascj/forms/index.html

Panels are proposed by individual scholars around a common subject. Panels are composed of up to five participants, three or four paper presenters and one or more discussants. Panel proposals should include a 250 word (maximum) abstract from each participant as well as a 250 word (maximum) statement that explains the session as a whole.

Roundtables offer an opportunity for participants to discuss a specific theme, issue or significant recent publication. A maximum of six active participants is recommended. While a roundtable proposal will not be as detailed as a panel proposal, it should explain fully the purpose, themes or issues, and scope of the session.

Individual papers give scholars an opportunity to participate in the conference even if they are not able to put together a complete panel. Since only a limited number of individual papers can be accommodated, preference will be given to junior scholars. Applicants have a better chance of acceptance as part of a panel.

The Executive Committee encourages members to submit proposals that, by focusing on more than one region or by drawing on more than one discipline, will attract a broad range of scholarly interest. Suggestions for innovative alternatives to the panels, individual papers and roundtables described above are also encouraged.

From 2014 the ASCJ initiated a Graduate Student Paper Prize. For details on this competition please see the ASCJ webpage. To be considered for this prize the student must be enrolled in a degree program at a Japanese university and present the paper at ASCJ 2015. The deadline for submission of the completed paper is June 7. The winner will be announced at the time of the keynote lecture.

The programs and abstracts of past ASCJ conferences can be found on the ASCJ webpage: http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~ascj/

Everyone worldwide interested in Asian Studies is invited to participate.

Book Announcement: Christianity and Imperialism in Modern Japan

Christianity and ImperialismSOAS STUDIES IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY JAPAN

Christianity and Imperialism in Modern Japan.  Emily Anderson
October 2014

Christianity and Imperialism in Modern Japan explores how Japanese Protestants engaged with the unsettling changes that resulted from Japan’s emergence as a world power in the early twentieth century. Through this analysis, the book offers a new perspective on the intersection of religion and imperialism in
modern Japan.

Emily Anderson reassesses religion as a critical site of negotiation between the state and its subjects as part of Japan’s emergence as a modern nation-state and colonial empire. The book shows how religion, including its adherents and the state’s attempts to determine acceptable belief, is a necessary subject of study for a nuanced understanding of modern Japanese history

Published in association with Bloomsbury, this series features new research monographs as well as translations of scholarship not previously available in English. Our goal is to publish high quality, peer-reviewed research on Japan, its history, politics and culture.

Fun Link Friday: Moku Hanga

Via Hyperallergic

Via Hyperallergic

The exhibit Moku Hanga: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Printing may have ended in August, but you can check out images and a great discussion of the woodblock-print pattern books on Hyperallergic.

The items are displayed in just two glass cases, but they contain a wealth of visually rich art and historically fascinating information. The books were created in a time-span beginning in the late 18th century and ending in the early 20th century. They were presented for customers to select a favored design, after which craftsmen would paint or print the pattern on the surface of the purchased item, whether they were kimonos, screens, lacquered panels, umbrellas, wallpaper, or other commercial items. Despite the commercial usage of these books, they were made using exactly the same woodblock technique that is so highly prized in the art prints of Japanese masters like Utamaro and Haronobu.
