Position: Assistant Professor, Buddhist Studies

Wesleyan University’s Department of Religion invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Religion, with a focus on Buddhist Studies, beginning July 1, 2018. We particularly encourage applications from scholars in the fields of history, sociology, hermeneutics, literary studies, and philosophy of religion. Applicants should have expertise in Buddhist textual traditions in their original languages, preferably with attention to wider circles of textual and visual production. We are seeking scholars who specialize in East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, or Southeast Asia, and who are capable of applying their methods to other religious cultures or traditions. Regardless of area of scholarly specialization, the successful candidate should demonstrate teaching competency relevant to East Asian Buddhisms. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach the Department’s Introduction to the Study of Religion and Majors Colloquium in Religious Studies on a rotating basis.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Religion, Buddhist Studies, or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in Religion, Buddhist Studies, or related field within one year of hire. The teaching load is 2/2. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level.
