East Asian Studies, a constituent unit within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, at the University of Leeds, UK, would like to draw your attention to the funding opportunities in Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian Studies listed below. The study of languages, cultures and linguistics enjoys over a century of history at the University of Leeds. East Asian Studies at Leeds has been established for over fifty years and, in 2004, it came together with the School of East Asian Studies at Sheffield and the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds to create the White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC).  Staff at Leeds pursue individual, collaborative and multidisciplinary research in the fields of language, literature, history, politics, economics, sociology, cultural studies, film and media studies, linguistics and translation studies. Underpinning our research is the appreciation of the key importance of language as a human institution and the intellectual, educational, and social value of its study. Schemes

 ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WR DTC) PhD Studentships
The ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Centre is a major collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. It offers a wealth of supervisory expertise across the social sciences. One PhD studentship is available for an outstanding UK/EU candidate proposing to begin a PhD, or an integrated MA+PhD in East Asian Studies in October 2017. ESRC studentships fund research in the social sciences. The award will cover fees at the UK/EU level and maintenance for three years (PhD) or for four years (MA+PhD). Sasakawa Studentships for Japanese Studies
Eligibility: UK/EU and International students who have applied to study for PhD (full time and part time) and UK students who have applied to study on an MA programme including MA by research (MAR). Non-UK students who have applied to study on an MA programme who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the programme.

2017 WRoCAH AHRC Competition Studentships
The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) is a Doctoral Training Partnership of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. It is responsible for the distribution of AHRC-funded doctoral studentships for these universities and for the coordination of a doctoral training programme.  WRoCAH is able to offer over 50 AHRC studentships per year to candidates with a place for doctoral study at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield or York. Applicants for an AHRC studentship must have applied for a place of study in an eligible School, Department or Centre and may only apply for funding at one of Leeds, Sheffield or York.

University Research Scholarships
Up to 18 University Research Scholarships are available for students from the United Kingdom and other EU countries who are commencing PhD study from October 2017. Each scholarship will cover the cost of academic fees at the University’s standard UK/EU rate and provide an annual maintenance grant (£14,057 in Session 2016/17). Applicants must hold at least a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent undergraduate degree.
Eligibility: Applicants must have already met the University’s English Language requirements prior to registration (some School requirements higher than University minimum). Be commencing PhD research degree study at the University of Leeds for the first time in Session 2017/18.
Value of award: academic fees at the University’s standard UK/EU rate and provide an annual maintenance grant (£14,057 in Session 2015/16)

Arts Cross Disciplinary Awards
Two Faculty of Arts Cross Disciplinary Research Scholarships will be available for UK/EU/International students for doctoral study commencing in October 2017. These scholarships have been created to meet a need for studentships for postgraduate research proposals that clearly cross two Schools within the Faculty of Arts.
Value of award: The awards will cover the cost of academic fees at the University of Leeds standard UK/EU rate and a maintenance grant up to £14,296 per annum (rate for Session 2016/17). The level of funding for part-time awards will be pro-rata (50%).

AHRC WRoCAH Research Preparation Masters Studentships
MA by Research, full or part-time.
Eligibility: Home/EU students only. For students intending to progress to PhD study.
Fees and maintenance: £14,296 in Session 2016/17+ for full-time study, part-time will be pro-rata. UK applicants will be eligible for a full award (paying fees and maintenance at standard Research Council rates) if they meet the residency criteria. EU applicants are normally eligible for a fees only award, unless they have been resident in the UK for a full 3 years immediately preceding the start date of the award.

Languages, Cultures and Societies (LCS) Scholarships
Eligibility: Available to all new UK/EU and International students undertaking full-time or part-time MA or PhD study (Masters by Research and PhD) in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds
Value of award: Part-fee bursaries at UK/EU fee levels may be awarded to individual applicants at the discretion of the Scholarships Committee.
