The Japan Committee of the University of Chicago is pleased to announce that it will be once again be holding its Early Modern Japanese Summer Workshop: Reading Kuzushiji. This year the workshop will meet from June 15th-19th and will be led by Professor Ken’ichi Aratake of Tohoku University. We invite applicants who are interested in reading print and manuscript materials from the Tokugawa and early Meiji periods. The workshop will be conducted in Japanese and participants should have a working knowledge of classical grammar and hentaigana.

Modest funds are available to aid faculty and graduate students coming from institutions unable to offer support.
