Job Opening: Position Media & Social Change, Carnegie Mellon Univ, Residential Fellow

Institution: Carnegie Mellon University, Media and Social Change
Location:   Pennsylvania, United States
Position:   Residential Fellowship – Media and Social Change

The Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University
Residential Fellowship, 2012-2013
Media and Social Change

During the 2012-2013 academic year the Humanities Center (in collaboration with the Center for the Arts in Society) will sponsor a series of lectures and workshops focused on Media and Social Change. This is a timely topic since the year 2011 has been marked by protests from Cairo, to Madison Wisconsin, to New York City and Santiago, Chile that have been explained in part by the role new media has played in their organization.  We will consider the relationship between media and social change in both recent years and in historical perspective. In what ways has media spurred and facilitated social change?  In what ways have new media forms made organizing for social change more difficult? These questions are of particular relevance to the humanities as we move further into the digital age.  While much of what fuels the digital revolution may be considered technology (cell phones, algorithms, software, apps), the content of new social media-tweets, Facebook updates, emails, Google searches, the talk produced by talking heads-this content demands new kinds of analysis from humanists.  Those of us who are trained to understand language, narrative, and the relationship between content and form are uniquely equipped to think about how these new media forms are making (and/or inhibiting) new kinds of relationships between people.

As part of this program, we invite applications for a residential fellowship at the junior or senior level.  Responsibilities include the presentation of a public lecture, participation in the Humanities Center’s Faculty Research Colloquium, and contributing to the intellectual life of the center. Fellows must be in residence in Pittsburgh during the term of the fellowship. Successful candidates must have the PhD in hand by the application deadline and have a focused research project that addresses one of the project’s central themes. Candidates for the senior fellowship must have a record of scholarship in an area relevant to the themes, and must currently hold a continuing academic position.  In addition, the fellow will teach one course relevant to the theme, which will be part of the Humanities Scholars Program.  Candidates are urged to consult the HSP website for further information about that program: http://www.hss.cmu.edu/hsp/. The stipend for the fellowship will be $35,000-$40,000, and the fellow will be provided an office and the use of a computer.  The fellowship also includes a small research and travel allowance.

The purpose of these fellowships is to promote exemplary interdisciplinary research in the humanities.  Applicants from any field in the humanities are invited to apply and priority will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines.  Applications from women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged.  The deadline for applications is January 15, 2012. Applicants must fill-out a brief on-line application at http://www.hss.cmu.edu/humanitiescenter/fellowform.html.  In addition, applicants are requested to send a c. v., a writing sample, a four-page proposal for research to be carried out during the period of the fellowship, three letters of reference, and (for the junior position only) a description of the undergraduate course to be offered. Application materials can be mailed to Humanities Center Fellowship Committee, Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Avenue, BH 154, Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890. Application materials may also be sent electronically to hssdean@andrew.cmu.edu, with “Humanities Center Junior [or Senior] Fellowship” in the subject line.

Call for Papers: Asia at the End of History: Beginnings, Ends, and Transformations

ASPAC, the Association for Asian Studies, Pacific announces a call for papers for the 2012 Conference at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington

Asia at the End of History: Beginnings, Ends, and Transformations

Gonzaga University is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the ASPAC (Association for Asian Studies, Pacific) conference in Spokane, Washington, between the 15th and 17th of June, 2012.

In recognition of the profusion of cultural, political, historical, and environmental heralds of change associated with the year 2012, the theme for the conference will be Asia at the End of History: Beginnings, Ends, and Transformations. Any and all proposals dealing with topics in Asian Studies are welcome for submission, but in keeping with the world-transformational implications of the “2012 moment,” the organizers are looking for papers and panels that deal with Asia’s role in the prospects and possibilities of deep transformation in the historical world. Aside from the obvious religious, psychological, sociological, literary, cinematic, artistic, mythic, and historical elements of the 2012 phenomenon, we are encouraging the submission of papers dealing with global finance, commerce, economics, and technology as well.

Conference Theme

Since the turn of the third western millennium, the world has experienced what appears to be a series of authentically transformational moments. We have witnessed the start of an open-ended global war on terrorism, cascading financial crises, and worldwide political instability expressed in such diverse movements as the “Arab Spring,” the “Tea Party Revolution,” and the “Occupation” of Wall Street.  We have endured ecological upheavals in the form of natural and man-made disasters, and have pushed nano-technology to the brink of a certifiably trans-human singularity. In the background of this dramatic unfolding of novelty, we see the hazy but sharpening contours of ancient prophecies and archaic revivals that seem to suggest that the world is due for some colossal re-organization. The apocalyptic imaginary, which has been as integral to the historical experience of Asia as it has been to the west, may represent a genuinely postmodern or even post-historical yearning for some kind of authentic reality beyond the increasingly self-discrediting process of modern material history. Indeed, the diverse impulses of Asian and Western millenarianism have in a real way worked to define and redefine each other throughout the twentieth century, leading to a cultural climate in which a vague yet wide-ranging anxiety has left the entire world wondering if future holds a greater degree of promise or peril.

Christian Asia

In keeping with the Catholic Jesuit tradition in which Gonzaga University was founded, the organizers are also presenting the sub-theme of Christian Asia, which seeks to highlight the transformational role that Christianity has played in Asia throughout the modern world.  In a series of panels, presentations, and workshops, we hope to gain greater insight into what may lie in store for the futures of both Christianity and Asia as the conversation between these diverse transnational civilizations grows deeper and more complex.

At ASPAC 2012,

We are expecting this to be an unusually diverse and interesting conference. Please join us in Spokane for a world-transforming event.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is 1 March 2012.

Fun Link Friday: Fried Chicken and Sushi

Fried Chicken and Sushi is a webcomic by Khalid Birdsong, a cartoonist and former JET. The comic is loosely based on his experiences in Japan and follows the adventures and misadventures of Karl, an American English teacher who arrives in Japan with a great love of the culture but no language skills.

"Corny Propaganda." Image copyright Fried Chicken and Sushi 2011.

Much of the comic is a humorous take on living in Japan as a foreigner–corn on pizza, staredowns with obaasans, and uncensored music–but the approach feels fresh, even though we all hear the corn-pizza freakout from all the new people every year. In addition, the comic also tackles perceptions of race and culture: Karl’s experiences as a black American in Japan; Hachiro’s as a Japanese American English teacher; and J’s experiences as the “black ninja expert” in the multicultural video game industry. What I like the most is how honest Birdsong is about the differences and similarities in the “foreigner in Japan” experience for different people–this is definitely not Charisma Man! (Though I am hoping to see some more female expats represented.)

Fried Chicken and Sushi updates every Tuesday and Thursday.
