Resource: USCF Japanese Woodblock Prints

Interested in Japanese medical history and art? Check out the University of California San Francisco’s (UCSF) Digital Collection of Japanese Woodblock Prints!

About

In 1963, an East Asian collection was started by UCSF Provost and university librarian, later Chancellor, John B. de C. Saunders, MD. The collection would continue to be developed over the next thirty years by librarian curator Atsumi Minami, who traveled to Japan and China acquiring woodblock prints as well as hundreds of rare Chinese and Japanese medical texts, manuscripts, and painted scrolls.

The Japanese woodblock prints within this collection offer a visual account of Japanese medical knowledge in the late Edo and Meiji periods. The majority of the prints date to the mid-late nineteenth century, when Japan was opening to the West after self-imposed isolation.

In 2003, the California Digital Library funded the project to make digital images of the prints available online. The project involved translating titles of the prints into English, updating the metadata, and digitally photographing the prints among other related tasks to develop the digital library.

Contents

The UCSF Japanese Woodblock Print Collection consists of approximately four hundred Japanese woodblock prints on health-related themes (approximately 350 currently available in the digital collection). It is the largest collection of woodblock prints related to health in the United States and an important component of UCSF Library’s East Asian Collection.

Each woodblock print includes the title, creator or contributer, date, and contributing institution. Users can click on the “More Information About This Image” link on each image’s page (shown below) and get more metadata such as subject, type, physical description, language, origin, and collection. Users also have the option of looking at the woodblock print as an image only or with text. Either option may be helpful to the user if they are using an image for a presentation or report.

Search and Navigation

Users have a few options to explore the Japanese Woodblock prints. The first and easiest way is to select the “View Prints” option and scroll the different pages of wood block prints. Once you find an artist’s print you really like, you can copy and paste their name in the search function to find all of the prints available in the digital archive created by the artist.

Another option is to view images by theme: Contagious Disease, Drug Advertisements, Foreigners & Disease, Religion & Health, and Women’s Health. This option is equally helpful for users who are unfamiliar with the wood block prints but interested in searching particular topics.

The search function allows you to enter one or more keywords (subject, artist’s name, etc.) in the search box and choose either “all terms” or “any terms.” The Boolean operands AND & OR are available for users to expand their search results. Additionally, quotation marks can be used for exact phrase searching. Last, but not least, users can use an asterick * for truncated searching. (ex: Budd* will search for terms like Buddhist, Buddhism, Buddha).

Observations

Using the search feature can be a bit difficult to a user unfamiliar to the subject or the artists. However, after browsing through several prints and looking at the metadata, any user can quickly become familiar with how the resources are organized and discover artists that you yourself will gravitate to. Once discovered, you can easily view woodblock prints by artists and subjects. I encourage you to check out UCSF’s Japanese Woodblock Print Collection!

Call for Papers: Social Media and Cross-border Cultural Transmissions: Technologies, Policies, Industries

Social Media and Cross-border Cultural Transmissions: Technologies, Policies, Industries

Asian Research Institute, National University of Singapore, 21-22 June 2012

This interdisciplinary workshop takes a transcultural approach to exploring newly emerging online practices of cultural transmission. Culture industries across Asia have been dynamically transformed during the past decades, and are significantly affected by multilayered economic, socio-political and technological turbulence occurring on both global and domestic levels. This workshop explores how social media, online consumer practices and transcultural pop flows have facilitated the emergence and development of new global cultural distribution avenues and transformed the cultural industry landscape, and how Asia is at the centre of this newly emerging global cultural economy. The workshop will focus on three specific areas:

1. Technologies: this workshop identifies key moments in the development of cultural distribution in the era of Web 2.0 technology. In particular, it focuses on the increased use of mobile social media in Asia, and its socio-politico-economic implications in the regionin both the positive and negative perspectives.

2. Policies: this workshop explores the relationship between changed consumer practices and market environments in Asia, and its influence on the re/formation of media cultural policies and governance in various Asian countries (such as policy-making around the copyright and online piracy issues).

3. Industries: this workshop expands current theorisations on the global cultural distribution dynamics, dynamics that were once predominantly centred on the Euro-American axis. Dynamics that are now empowered by Web 2.0-driven user participation on social networking sites (SNS), yet are still under the significant influence of dominant corporate media chains.

The primary intention of the workshop is to examine both positive and negative connotations of the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on cross-border cultural transmission and the transformation of cultural industries in Asia. This workshop aims to explore the following questions:

How have contemporary cultural flows formed by particular combinations of globalisation dynamics and technological innovations, and how and why has Asia become the emerging hub of such a phenomenon?
Who is at the centre of these changed cultural distribution dynamics, and how do they combine and appropriate old and new modes of cultural distribution?
To what extent is such a newly emerging mode of cultural distribution still a tool employed by powerful groups (e.g., corporate media and state governments) attempting to support their control and domination of pop consumer groups?
In what ways has web user participation, particularly online youth activities on social networking sites, shifted the mode of transcultural flows in the global cultural market environment?
How have such shifts demonstrated the expansion of the dynamics of global cultural flows, considering they were once predominantly centred on the Euro-American axis?
How have changes in these paradigms affected the cultural industries in Asia and elsewhere in the context of transformations in industry structure, technology, market development and policy-making?

The workshop is intended to be an intimate gathering of scholars across all social science fields and disciplines, both within and outside Asia. We invite the submission of theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of transcultural flows of Asian popular products in the era of Web 2.0 technology. In this, we encourage papers that reflect the diverse media cultural dynamics active within the different areas of creative industries and markets.

Book Announcement: A Sociology of Japanese Youth

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sociology-Japanese-Youth-Returnees-Institute/dp/0415669278/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1301844680&sr=8-3

Over the past thirty years, whilst Japan has produced a diverse set of youth cultures which have had a major impact on popular culture across the globe, it has also developed a succession of youth problems which have led to major concerns within the country itself. Drawing on detailed empirical fieldwork, the authors of this volume set these issues in a clearly articulated ‘social constructionist’ framework, and put forth a sociology of Japanese youth problems which argues that there is a certain predictability about the way in which these problems are discovered, defined and dealt with.

The chapters include case studies covering issues such as:

  • Returnee children (kikokushijo)
  • Compensated dating (enjo kōsai)
  • Corporal punishment (taibatsu)
  • Bullying (ijime)
  • Child abuse (jidō gyakutai)
  • The withdrawn youth (hikikomori) and
  • NEETs (not in education, employment or training)

By examining these various social problems collectively, A Sociology of Japanese Youth explains why particular youth problems appeared when they did and what lessons they can provide for the study of youth problems in other societies.

This book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Japanese society and culture, the sociology of Japan, Japanese anthropology and the comparative sociology of youth studies.

Position:   Post-Doctoral Fellow
