Happy birthday, Shinpai Deshou!

Happy birthday, Shinpai Deshou! It’s hard to believe another year has gone by! Like our train cake? (It’s the only picture of a cake I could find with a number 2 on it…)

What can I do with a B.A. in Japanese Studies? sputtered to a start two years ago today, which means for some reason I was sitting around during finals week at the IUC (probably weeping into a textbook) and suddenly had the urge to try making a Japanese Studies blog again. But two years later, we have 355 followers via email, 180 on Facebook, 206 on Twitter, and an untold number subscribing via RSS feed. We’ve had about 113,000 hits since we launched, and though in 2010 we only had 5,172 in the six months we opened, in 2011 we had over 57,060 hits. With only 5 months left in this year, we’ve already reached 50,567, and our incoming views are from all over the world! That’s amazing growth, especially considering how terrible I am at social networking via the web. 😉

We owe our continued expansion to you, the readers! You guys not only encourage us, but also bring valuable suggestions and insight into how our content can best serve the Japanese Studies community, be it for academics, professionals, or casual learners. So thank you all and please continue to spread the word about Shinpai Deshou!

Want to see anything new in the next year? Want more on a particular topic? Email us at shinpai.deshou@gmail.com, tweet us, catch up with us on Facebook, or leave a comment below! Thanks everyone!

Book Announcement: The Premise of Fidelity: Science, Visuality, and Representing the Real in Nineteenth-Century Japan

http://www.sup.org/book.cgi?id=20941

The Premise of Fidelity: Science, Visuality, and Representing the Real in Nineteenth-Century Japan
Maki Fukuoka
Stanford University Press
Forthcoming July 2012
ISBN: 9780804777902

The Premise of Fidelity puts forward a new history of Japanese visuality through an examination of the discourses and practices surrounding the nineteenth century transposition of “the real” in the decades before photography was introduced. This intellectual history is informed by a careful examination of a network of local scholars—from physicians to farmers to bureaucrats—known as Shohyaku-sha. In their archival materials, these scholars used the term shashin (which would, years later, come to signify “photography” in Japanese) in a wide variety of medical, botanical, and pictorial practices. These scholars pursued questions of the relationship between what they observed and what they believed they knew, in the process investigating scientific ideas and practices by obsessively naming and classifying, and then rendering through highly accurate illustration, the objects of their study.

This book is an exploration of the process by which the Shohyaku-sha shaped the concept of shashin. As such, it disrupts the dominant narratives of photography, art, and science in Japan, providing a prehistory of Japanese photography that requires the accepted history of the discipline to be rewritten.

Fun Link Friday: “Two Views of the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage”

Image from Neojaponisme.

Today’s fun link is “Two Views of the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage” on Néojaponisme. In the article, W. David Marx interviews two American writers who hiked the 88-temple henro route in Shikoku (separately) and wrote about their experiences.

Tucked between the very end of Honshu and the top of Kyushu, Shikoku is the least traveled and least familiar major island of the Japanese archipelago. There are few famous sites or tourist attractions, and most guidebooks recommend the location as a way to “experience rural Japan.” Shikoku does, however, attract a constant stream of visitors every year to walk, bus, bike, or drive through its famed 88-temple Buddhist pilgrimage route.

While most pilgrims in modern times are retirees moving through the course easily with the aid of tour buses, we wanted to get a sense of what it was like to do the course by foot as a young explorer with modern travel expectations. So we caught up with two American writers who have turned their Shikoku foot journeys into books: literary memoirist Gideon Lewis-Kraus and former travel writer Matthew Firestone.
