The 13th Biennial Conference of Asian Studies in Israel; (East, South and Central Asia); 18-19 May, 2016

We are delighted to announce that the 13th Biennial Conference of Asian Studies in Israel will take place at Tel-Hai College on Wednesday-Thursday, May 18-19, 2016. The conference framework remains unchanged; it will be a two-day event, with cultural activities held in the evening of the first day. Researchers are invited to submit proposals for panels and papers on Asia-related academic fields. To facilitate fruitful discussions, we encourage the submission of proposals for organized thematic panels. The submission of proposals for individual papers is also very much welcomed. Submissions for panels and individual papers are due via email to the conference secretariatASI13TH2016@telhai.ac.il, as well as to the conference convener isay@telhai.ac.il, in PDF form and in Word file by November 30, 2015. Notification of acceptance will be sent in January 2016.

Proposals should include a title of the panel/paper and an abstract (250 words max.), and your name, email address, institutional affiliation, and a short bionote. Panel proposals should include the title and abstract of each paper. Conference languages are English and Hebrew (we will consider presentations in other languages as well). Proposals should be submitted either in English (for presentations in English) or in Hebrew and English (for presentations in Hebrew). Conference presentations should last 20 minutes. Q&A sessions will take place during a general discussion period at the end of each panel. There will be a computer and a projector in every conference room. If you need additional equipment, please note it in your proposal.

The conference is open to the public and participation is free of charge. Conference participants can book rooms in Kfar Giladi Hotel. Tel-Hai Hostel and a variety of other hotels are also available. Discounted rates will be announced separately.

We would be grateful if you could distribute this call for papers among your colleagues.

Program Officer for the Business & Policy Program

The Program Officer will work with the Deputy Director in conceiving, planning and implementing approximately three programs per month. He/she will also draft and edit program materials and assist in program execution, research, program outreach activities, and interact with leaders and distinguished speakers in the academic and business community, as well as thousands of Corporate Members. He/she will also oversee and manage administrative and logistical tasks.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Draft and edit materials for events, Annual Report and Chronology, invitation, thank you and confirmation letters
  • Develop and implement public and private events for the Business & Policy Program
  • Coordinate with building staff; oversee room setup and facilities
  • Liaise with collaborating organizations on program content and logistics
  • Conduct research on companies, individuals and industry sectors
  • Conceive and execute outreach for events via e-newsletter, twitter, hardcopy calendar and website
  • Manage and grow the department’s social media presence
  • Coordinate with Communications team on media outreach and online presence
  • Work with Development and Special Events on networking events, including Young Professionals Network and Expats Gatherings
  • Handle program registrations, payments and refunds
  • Create program materials, such as guest lists, name badges, handouts, etc.
  • Greet and assist program participants
  • Facilitate travel and logistics for speakers, including hotel, audio/visuals, translations, and book sales
  • Maintain and update constituent records in Raisers Edge
  • Organize files on programs and speakers, update biographical files, photographs and institutional information
  • Prepare expense and statistical reports, and handle other administrative duties
  • Train and supervise interns

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three to five years related experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to read and understand Japanese documents
  • Knowledge of international business and politics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite, online research, social media and database management
  • Superior organizational skills with ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and in a team

Job description

The Regional Educational Advising Coordinator (REAC) for Northeast Asia and the Pacific Region provides professional leadership and support to the EducationUSA network of advising centers in this region to foster international student mobility and advance the U.S. Government’s public diplomacy efforts. In close consultation with U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ (ECA), the REAC counsels Public Affairs Sections (PAS) on student mobility issues and advising programs and provides guidance and training to advisers and host institutions. He/she receives policy guidance from ECA and PAS. Work is carried out independently under general supervision.

Position will be based in the Northeast Asia and the Pacific Region. Preference for Japan or South Korea.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides guidance to EducationUSA advisers throughout the region through site visits, consultations, workshops, and regular email and telephone communication. Travels extensively on behalf of the EducationUSA network and visits each country in the region every two years or more frequently as needed and pending available resources.
  • Designs and delivers trainings and workshops, in-person and virtually, tailored to meet competency development needs for individual advisers and the region.
  • Counsels and assists PAS in the development of educational advising programs to achieve mission public diplomacy goals. Provides guidance to PAS and partner institutions hosting EducationUSA Advising Centers in developing the annual country strategic plan for advising.
  • Facilitates EducationUSA collaboration with the U.S. higher education community to increase student mobility, working with local external partners as appropriate.
  • Serves as a regional resource providing expert advice on international student recruitment and retention to U.S. higher education institutions and organizations; contributes to the EducationUSA website, online journals and other outreach platforms.
  • Works closely with ECA to develop programs, procedures and guidance in support of EducationUSA advising in the region and the global network.
  • Provides timely updates and reports to ECA and IIE as appropriate and required.
  • Develops and maximizes use of innovative tools and resources to enable the global EducationUSA network to reach and serve larger and more diverse audiences.
  • Engages with embassies’ regional English language officers (RELOs), information resource officers (IROs), and consular officers to strengthen priority program areas.
  • Responsible for complying with applicable service agreement and sponsor requirements and following all organization policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties and functions as assigned

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or equivalent academic degree preferred.
  • Seven years of overall experience, with a minimum 5 years of experience working within the field of higher education, international education, international affairs, or a similar field.
  • Experience working within or conducting work related to the region of hire and familiarity with the higher education systems for that region.
  • In-depth knowledge of the U.S. higher education system.
  • 2 years of management experience strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven cross-cultural skills, particularly in the area of communications.
  • Ability to work effectively with partners and stakeholders from various sectors: academic, professional, corporate, student, government, U.S. Embassy, NGO, media, etc.
  • Strong analytical, information-gathering, writing, and oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage program budgets, team members, and projects.
  • Excellent skills in time management, problem-solving, leadership, marketing, planning, and negotiation.
  • English language required; fluency in a local language preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally 25 – 50%.

Work Authorization Requirements: The incumbent is expected to be able to meet the requirements necessary to obtain work authorization in the country selected as the primary work location.

Call for Papers: USC Korean Studies Institute Graduate Symposium

The USC Korean Studies Institute is pleased to announce the fourth annual graduate student symposium and invite paper and discussant proposals. The symposium aims to professionalize graduate students, nurture their scholarship, and create interdisciplinary networks of Ph.D. students working on research related to Korea, East Asia, and/or Asian diasporas. The symposium provides students from various institutions with the chance to meet and share research in progress with their peers and participating faculty. In addition, participants will engage in workshops that will build their professional and research skills. The symposium will be followed by dinner for all participants.

Graduate students from any department and any university, especially in California, are encouraged to submit paper proposals or serve as discussants. We hope to achieve an interdisciplinary mix of research papers from both the social sciences and humanities. Particularly encouraged are research papers that include Korea in a larger comparative or theoretical framework.

PARTICIPATION

Participants can take part in the symposium as presenters or discussants. Please indicate on your application which role(s) you are applying for.

To submit a paper proposal or offer to be a discussant, please e-mail a short cover letter and 250-word abstract (for papers), or indicate your willingness to serve as a discussant, by October 9 to Minwoo Jung (minwooju@usc.edu). Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by October 16.

SUMMARY:

Based in Washington, DC, the Program Officer position for the Critical Language Scholarship Program administers intensive overseas summer language institutes for U.S. graduate and undergraduate students. Responsibilities focus on program administration and logistics, as well as communication with program participants and partners in the East Asia and Pacific Region, with a focus on Indonesia, Japan and Korea. The Program Officer position will also provide secondary support for programs in another region.

The position will require close attention to detail, the ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently, and a readiness to communicate with diverse groups of people. The Program Officer will work closely with the Project Director on the administration of language programs and preparation of participants. While organizational skills and administrative experience will be an important plus for any candidate, an extensive understanding of academic culture for study abroad programs is also important. Some travel will be required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the administration of institutional partner agreements and budgets;
  • Coordinate with overseas partners on program components;
  • Respond to participant requests and inquiries;
  • Oversee and direct visa processing;
  • Prepare and distribute program materials and handbooks;
  • Organize and participate in pre-departure orientations and virtual trainings for outbound groups;
  • Coordinate recruitment of short-term Resident Director staff positions;
  • Advise and provide training to on-site Resident Directors;
  • Manage weekly conference calls with on-site Resident Directors and maintain daily email correspondence, as needed;
  • Arrange overseas travel and logistics for outbound groups;
  • Maintain occasional contact with an advisory board of language teaching professionals;
  • Contribute to team projects for the development and revision of program materials on a regular basis;
  • Process check requests, prepare invoices and track program payments and expenses;
  • Assist in program recruitment, outreach, and communications efforts;

  • Assist in organizing teacher-training workshops;
  • Assist in writing and preparation of reports and grant proposals for funding agencies;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of a CLS language preferred;
  • Experience in study abroad, international education, federally funded programs for cultural exchange, or familiarity with the field of Second Language Acquisition;

The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) Program at the College of William and Mary seeks applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. The successful applicant will be jointly appointed in a home department and AMES. AMES is a concentration within the interdisciplinary major of Global Studies, and is supported by 32 faculty affiliates from eleven departments.

We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in Middle Eastern, East Asian, and/or South Asian studies. We welcome applicants in the humanities or humanistic social sciences including, but not limited to Anthropology, Art and Art History, Cultural Studies, Government, Literature, Religious Studies, and other areas of scholarly expertise pending departmental approval. The Japanese Studies programme within the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at Copenhagen University primarily focuses on Japan in the modern era. Current staff on the programme research and teach in such areas as Japanese history, literature, society and culture. The candidate being sought for the current position could cover any area of Japanese studies as long as the main focus is on Modern Japan.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue research in his or her field of specialization and to teach appropriate content courses at all levels, as well as contribute to certain aspects of language teaching.

Specific requirements

  • Excellent command of spoken and written Japanese
  • The necessary skills and willingness communicate with students, colleagues, administrative and support staff and the wider community
  • The capacity and willingness to contribute to the Japanese language-teaching programme
  • The capacity and willingness to teach and design courses at BA and MA levels (candidates should indicate in their application in which potential areas they would like to develop their teaching profiles)

  • The capacity to contribute to teaching in other programmes at the Department of Cross-cultural and Regional Studies, including team-taught courses

A tenure-track assistant professorship is a six-year, fixed-term academic position involving both research and teaching. The successful candidate post will be obliged to complete a teacher-training course designed especially for assistant professors, and will be expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration.

Approximately six months before the end of the six-year period as assistant professor, a committee set up by the Dean will assess whether the assistant professor can be considered for promotion to a tenured position as associate professor.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have a PhD degree or its equivalent within the area advertised. Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can demonstrate teaching experience at university level.

The duties of the position are evenly distributed on tasks related to teaching and tasks related to research (including relevant administration and knowledge-sharing). Documented competences in both of these main fields of activity, as well as the ability to reflect on them, will be weighted in the assessment process (see further below).

Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on the following academic and personal qualifications:

  • Research qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the period of active research, the degree of originality, and academic output, e.g. number of publications published in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals or in comparable high-ranking series published with internationally recognized publishing houses.
  • The applicant’s scientific record, academic breadth and depth, rigour, thoroughness, and accuracy

Tenure-track assistant professors must hold an academic record demonstrating internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized potential to make a future impact.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be taken into account. Applicants’ outreach qualifications, including the ability to attract external funding, will also be considered.

Within a reasonable period of time (max. 2 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to teach in Danish as well as interact with colleagues and students.
