The Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program in the Nagoya University Global 30 International Programs seeks to fill a full-time, non-tenure-track, Associate, or Full Professor position. The successful candidate will work in the Graduate School of Letters. She/He will teach no more than 8 courses per year (8 komas per year*) including possible evening and weekend courses. As a full-time faculty, she/he will be expected to hold office hours, provide academic advising for students and perform the normal duties associated with teaching as well as research activities.  (*In Japan one course or koma is equivalent to one 90-minute class per week for 15 weeks.)

Possible courses that the successful candidate will be expected to teach:
Introduction to Japanese history, Introduction to history of Asian culture
Japanese culture in Asia, Thesis Writing
Seminar: Modern Japanese history

Minimum Qualifications
1.Research experience in modern Japanese history in relation to Asia
2.Teaching experience in modern Japanese history or a related field
3.Demonstrated ability to advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels
4.Willing to participate widely in the International Programs of the university including but not limited to teaching courses to Japanese students and some administrative duties
5.Strong inter-personal skills and evidence of effective interaction with students, faculty, administration, and community
6.English fluency to effectively teach abovementioned courses

Preferred Qualifications
1.Preferably Doctoral degree in history or a related field
2.Experience working in a multicultural environment preferred
3.Japanese language proficiency is welcomed though not required
4.Preferably Non-Japanese citizenship

Nagoya University seeks individuals with demonstrated excellence especially in teaching introductory courses to international students from all over the world in Japan.

The initial contract will be starting April 1, 2014, and terminating March 31, 2017.

Contingent upon job performance and funding of the Global 30 International Program, the contract may be renewable for an additional 2-year term.

Salary: JPY4,000,000-10,000,000/year (all inclusive)

Salary will depend on qualifications and experience, based on Nagoya Universitys Salary Rules for Employees to whom the Annual Salary System applies. Taxes and insurances will be withheld from the annual salary.

5.One page statement of teaching philosophy, addressing the applicant’s ability to integrate creative thinking and global perspectives into the courses taught
6.Evidence of teaching excellence, such as any of the following items:
a.Copies of past course syllabifrom at least two different coursesprepared and used by the applicant illustrating his/her teaching philosophy
b.DVD of the applicants teaching
c.Student evaluation forms and summaries from at least two different courses
d.Student letters
e.Public commendations, prizes, and other awards for teaching excellence
7.List of all publications and copies of up to five (if applicable)
8.Current areas of research (if applicable)
