Job Description

1.5-Year Contract. May be renewed thereafter. The incumbent will be based in Tokyo Gakugei University.

Purpose

The role of the Japanese Translation Lead is essentially to ensure that all documentation produced in Japanese by the IB is of appropriate quality and that production deadlines are met, within the approved budgets and the Language Services department quality assurance framework.

Main Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and manage freelance language professionals to ensure the quality of materials translated into Japanese
  • Manage Japanese translation projects to ensure their timely completion to an appropriate standard and within budget
  • Develop appropriate quality assurance tools for translations into Japanese, in compliance with the Language Services QA framework
  • Advise on the implementation of adequate IT systems to deal with the production of materials in Japanese, to ensure quality and efficiency of production processes
  • Revise translations to ensure the quality and consistency of Japanese materials
  • Carry out occasional translation work
  • Oversee the editing and proofreading of individual print and online publications to ensure the quality and consistency of Japanese materials
  • Liaise with the rest of the Dual Language Diploma Programme project team to understand their needs and requirements and provide linguistic support
  • Provide cultural insight to other IB staff to ensure the international mindedness/nature of projects and publications.

Requirements

  • University graduate, qualified translator (preferably a postgraduate qualification)
  • Substantial experience as a translator/reviser, at least some of it in a company/ organization
  • Proven translation, editing and revising skills
  • Proven experience in project and team management
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Able to motivate and manage a team of translators
  • Able to set and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Able to relate to other departments in the organization to coordinate projects
  • Excellent command of the Japanese language, to the level of an educated native speaker
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Experience of forging relationships in an international context.
  • Awareness of Japanese educational system.
  • Familiarity with production processes for both print and online publications and some background in education would be beneficial. Good knowledge of other languages, (preferably IB languages) will also be an advantage.
