Duties & Responsibilities
-Manages editing, design, typesetting, and production from the manuscript stage through bound books for 4-5 titles a year.
-Independently develops editing guidelines for each project after analyzing nature and condition of manuscript and illustration program.
-For each manuscript, diagnoses problems in content, language, and illustrations, given knowledge of generally accepted publishing practices and the program’s standards, academic discipline of book, and overall publishing plan; determines best solution for problem in light of publishing plan, cost, and schedule; authorizes or makes changes accordingly.
-For each manuscript, analyzes typographic elements and technical aspects of illustration program.
-Prepares catalog and other advertising copy.
-Handles relations with printers and other vendors and with HUP.
-Edits 2-3 manuscripts a year.
-Edits manuscripts for style, content, organization, and language.
-Leads project teams.
-In consultation with director and the author, devises plan for editing and producing individual projects.
-Coordinates activities to meet targets established for manuscript delivery, turnover, bound book, and publication dates; book profile (size, length, appearance, level of discourse, illustrations/charts/graphs/tables, price); investment and income.
-Develops schedule for production from edited manuscripts to bound books. Communicates schedules to author and others concerned in production; determines need for adjustment throughout production and authorizes as needed.
-Supervises freelance editors and full-service book packagers.
-Instructs freelance editor or book packager on requirements of manuscript.
-Analyzes editing samples.
-Supervises freelance editorial contractors.
-Estimates cost of editing for each project and authorizes payment for freelance editorial work.
-Negotiates with author in editing and production of each book.
-Before editing, presents editing plan to author; answers questions, negotiates solutions to any problems/disagreements.
-During editing process, explains changes made to manuscript that editor has determined to be necessary; negotiates author’s approval of edited manuscript.
-During production process, presents author with interior design: educates author as to goal of design (different for each book), purpose of various design elements, technical considerations involved; answers author questions; judges any requests. Prepares and processes computer files; enters author’s and editor’s changes; proofreads.
-For all typeset materials, evaluates author’s changes in light of schedule and budget requirements, overall publishing plan, and generally accepted publishing standards; approves changes that meet these guidelines; overrules inappropriate ones, explaining reasons to author.
-Advises author and freelance proofreader and/or indexer.
-Educates author in the overall editing and production process: provides specific rationale for decisions made in editing.
-Guides author or freelancer in creation of index, given content of book, field, and intended readership.
-Authorizes release of books.
-Ultimately responsible for approving all components of book (jacket/cover, case, interior), ensuring that all interior pages, jacket, files sent to printer, printer’s proofs, and printed pages (f&g’s) meet publishing industry and especially program standards for correctness, quality, and accuracy of content.
-Evaluates incoming manuscripts.
-Assesses newly submitted manuscripts to determine their readiness for publication and to troubleshoot possible editing, production, and permissions problems.
-Advises director and authors on manuscript preparation, preparation of artwork, and organizational and stylistic matters for forthcoming manuscripts.
-Writes manuscript preparation instructions for authors.

Basic Qualifications

Graduate degree in Asian Studies or related field. Working knowledge of either Japanese or Korean and experience working with Asian-language software programs. Two to three years of communications/publications experience, with at least one year of in-house publishing experience.

Additional Qualifications

Excellent proofreading skills, familiarity with basic editorial principles and scholarly conventions, and knowledge of general publishing procedures such as basic design, typesetting, stages of proofs, and printing procedures. Proven ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and to meet deadlines; attention to detail; demonstrated organizational abilities; PC word-processing skills and knowledge of desktop publishing; good interpersonal and supervisory skills to handle freelancers and to deal with others involved in the publication process. Must be able to work independently and to reset priorities regularly based on the overall goals of the publications program. In-house proofreading and take-home editorial tests required of all applicants.
