The University of Auckland invites applications for appointment as Professor of Japanese Studies, commencing early 2012. The School of Asian Studies is seeking a senior academic with an outstanding research and teaching record to provide leadership in research, supervision and teaching, particularly at postgraduate level, in Japanese Studies. The successful appointee will specialise in modern or contemporary Japan and will work within the School of Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts, with the opportunity for cross-department teaching and supervision depending on specialty. The position is open in terms of research and teaching specialisation, but specialists in the areas of Cultural Studies, History, Politics and International Relations are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a new position created with support from the Japan Foundation.

University and Department

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading research university and the Faculty of Arts was recently ranked 51st in the world for faculties for arts, humanities and social sciences (QS World University Rankings, September 2010). The School of Asian Studies is the only specialist Asian Studies department in New Zealand and also houses the largest community of academic staff and students in this field. It offers programmes in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Asian Studies. Research interests in the School are wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, and in both research and teaching the School is well positioned within a broader community of scholarship on Asia both within the University and in the Asia Pacific region. The University enjoys active relations with many of the top universities in East Asia.
