Call for Papers: A Symposium – On the Track and Field between Iran and Japan: Sport, Society, and Politics in Asia

The University of Haifa, January 9, 2012

We invite proposals for a symposium concerning the role of sport in the history, politics, society, culture, and economy of modern and contemporary Asia, including nations from Iran eastwards. We are interested in particular in proposals exploring issues such as the role of sport in Asian nations under colonial rule; the role of sport in the post-colonial era; the ways sport has been related to processes of nation building in Asia; the role it plays among minorities in Asia; the ways governments employ sport for political purposes; the place of sport under the context of the encounter between tradition and modernity; the way it relates to gender issues, etc. These and similar issues are at the core of the coming symposium, but the organizing committee welcomes proposals on any other topic pertinent to the role of sport in the aforementioned region.

Guidelines for submitting an individual paper:

1) Include the following: paper title, name and institutional affiliation, contact information including email address and phone number, and an abstract of 150-200 words.
2) Email the proposal as an attachment in MSWord format.
3) Send your proposal to gpodoler@research.haifa.ac.il
4) Use “Sport in Asia, paper proposal” as a header.

Guidelines for Submitting a Panel:

1) All papers should be prepared along the above guidelines, and the panel chair should organize them into a single document that opens with the panel’s title and a panel description of about 150 words.
2) Use “Sport in Asia, panel proposal” as a header.

Deadline for submitting a proposal: October 30, 2011.
Decisions regarding acceptance will be sent by November 15, 2011.
