The Japanese program in the School of International Letters and Cultures at Arizona State University (Tempe campus) seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Japanese Literature for a one-semester replacement appointment in the fall of 2011, OR a Lecturer in Japanese Language and Literature for the 2011-2012 academic year. This is an excellent opportunity for a young scholar who would benefit from the experience of teaching in a well-established department with a thriving undergraduate Japanese major and a growing MA program.
Applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professorship in Japanese Literature for the fall semester, 2011, should be at the ABD level or have the PhD in hand. A specialization in classical literature is preferred, but not required. This person would teach two undergraduate courses: a survey of literature to 1600 in translation, and a fourth-year Japanese language course with an emphasis on developing reading skills. There would also be opportunities to work with graduate students in tutorials and thesis preparation.
Applicants for a two-semester, 2011-2012, appointment as Lecturer in Japanese Language and Literature should hold the same qualifications. The teaching load would be three courses each semester. Two of the fall courses would be those described above; the other courses, still to be determined, would probably include both undergraduate and graduate courses.
If interested in either of these positions, please send a statement of interest summarizing your qualifications and indicating which position you wish to apply for, with a current CV and teaching evaluations (if available), and arrange for 3 letters of reference that address your skills as a teacher and scholar, to:
