Position: Assistant Professor, East Asian Religions
The Department of Religion and Culture, College of Arts and Science, University of Saskatchewan, invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in East Asian Religions commencing on July 1, 2011. The successful candidate should have significant graduate level training in a broad Religious Studies/Asian Studies Program or its equivalent with a primary specialization in Chinese Religions, and a secondary concentration on religion and culture in Japan. Only candidates with a completed Ph.D. and preferably teaching experience will be considered. Competence in theoretical and comparative issues in cross-cultural perspective and a capacity for collaborative inter-disciplinary research are expected, along with appropriate competence in the classical and modern Chinese and Japanese languages. Some administrative experience, organizational and human resource management skills, and potential ability to participate in an academic leadership role in the near future are assets. In light of the Departments commitment to innovative and interdisciplinary inquiry, we especially invite candidates whose teaching and research attracts students in the Departments of History, Languages and Linguistics, Philosophy, and Interdisciplinary Centre for Culture and Creativity in the Division of Humanities (ICCC).
We are seeking an academician who is enthusiastic about developing the department’s national and international research and scholarly profile with a commitment to teaching excellence and supporting training of graduate students and research. Candidates with a proven record of scholarship and research, clear visions for future research, and established or intended sources of external funding, including SSHRC funding, will be given highest consideration.
The responsibilities of the position include teaching semester courses in the areas of East Asian Religions and Culture, Introduction to World Religions, theoretical and methodological issues in Religious Studies, Classical Chinese language and literature, and any other assigned classes, along with committee work appropriate to the academic preparation and rank.
