Fun Link Friday: Periscope Studio’s Miyazaki Tribute

Based in Portland, Periscope Studio is the largest studio of freelance comic artists in the US. Periscope hosts a sketch blog on Tumblr, and the weeklong sketch-blog challenge for Jan. 24-30 was the work of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, whose film canon includes Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008).

As someone who created Miyazaki-themed sculptures in art class in high school, I really loved seeing characters and scenes the artists chose to depict in their tribute pieces. Furthermore, it reminded me of the influence Miyazaki and his films have had on our generation. Of course, his style has influenced young artists, but in my case, Miyazaki’s films really kick-started my intellectual affair with Japan, where I currently live and work.

Enjoy the art and, if you haven’t already, check out Miyazaki’s and Studio Ghibli’s fantastic films!
