Assistant Professor in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Japanese Studies)

Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Japanese Studies), from September 1, 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. Appointees with demonstrated performance will be considered for tenure towards the end of the second three-year contract.
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is part of the Faculty of Arts and offers area studies programmes in American Studies, European Studies, Japanese Studies and Modern China Studies, as well as language majors/minors, undergraduate and certificate courses in Arabic, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Thai. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree and a high international standing in Sino-Japanese relations, with a good record of high-quality research and scholarly publications. The appointee should be able to demonstrate strong academic, teaching and administrative ability, and an ability to promote a collaborative research culture. He/She will also be expected to teach and supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Annual salary will be in the range of HK$484,980 – 749,520 (approximately US$1 = HK$ 7.8) (subject to review from time to time at the entire discretion of the University), with starting salary depending on qualifications and experience. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment carries leave and medical/dental benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
